Clint Stark. 19-year-old left hander, pitched the victory, scat tering seven hits. It was Port land's seventh straight win over Spokane this season. Don Newcombe was the loser. He gave up only five hits, but four of them came in the fourth inning. Phil Gagliano opened the Port land fourth with a single. Don Landrum followed with another. Outfielder Bob. Burda then cracked a triple to center field, scoring two runs. Gene Oliver drove him home with a single. Newcombe settled down then, but the damage was done. That left Portland 5''i games behind the leading Seattle Rain iers. Raior Wildtd Pitcher Carl Greene wielded the razor Wednesday night as Van couvcr shaved a game off Seat tle's lead in the tight Pacific Coast League title race. Greene spaced seven Rainier hits, went two-for-four at uce plate and scored two Vancouver runs in the Mounties' 3-2 win over the league-leaders in a series-opener at Seattle. The win left the Rainiers games ahead of Tacoma's Giants, who edged the San Diego Padres 7-6 at Tacoma. The Mounties moved to within 4Wi games of Seattle. Salt Lake City southpaw Sam McDowell, an 18-year-old bonus boy, allowed Hawaii only four hits as he pitched the Bees to an 8-2 decision over the Islanders at Hon olulu. He had a one-hut shutout until the eighth. He struck out nine while walking seven. The spurting Mounties. who have won 12 of their last 15 out ings, opened the scoring in the third inning when Greene doubled, advanced on an error and raced home on Billy Consolo's fly to deep right. In the seventh, Greene doubled again after Seattle starter Ted Wills had walked Rick Herr scher, and Hcrrscher scored. Greene brought in the final tally on Consolo's single. Catcher John Orsinos bases- loaded homer in the five-run sixth inning was the winning blow as Tacoma clipped the Padres. Dusty Knoaes opened the inning with a triple. Two walks loaded the bases and another pass by reliever Don Williams forced in a run. Orsino's grand-slammer followed. Lewiston, .the Northwest League's first half champs, was idled when rain washed out its tilt with Eugene. yakima made it two in a row over Tri-Cities, edging the Braves 5-4 in the league's other contest. Tommy Humber. Ed Kopaci and Dick Crowe shared honors in the Salem attack. Humber had four hits, including a double and triple, and batted in four runs. Kopacz drove in five runs on a homer and a double and Crowe hit a bases-loaded triple. Salem pitcher Bill Boehlcrt lost his shut out when the Chiefs scored threo runs in the ninth. Yakima bounced in front with three runs in the first inning, but Jerry Gilbert's three-run homer in the bottom of tne frame put ine Braves back into contention. A double by Dan Staniec and Hap Richie s single broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth and gave Yakima the winning margin. He shot an eight and a closing round 74. 1 State Deaf Olympics Boys PORTLAND (AP) Four Ore gon members of the U. S. Deaf Olympics team will meet Port land mayor Terry Schrunk today. Schrunk aided a campaign which raised almost $5,000 to helu send the boys to competition at Helsinki, Finland this summer. The boys are Gerald Buyas and Bryan Powers, Portland; Leo Reid. Springfield; ana uavia Wood, Stayton. All runners, they are the first Orcgonians to quali fy for the U. S. Deaf Olympics squad which is competing for thi ninth time. Briton Wants Title Shot- . ROME (AP) British light- weight Dava Charnley, who stopped Raimondo Nobile of Italy in the fourth round Wednesday night, said today he wants an other shot - at the world light weight title. I plan to meet Joe Brown, the champion, as soon as possible," Charnley said.
