Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lightner of Seattle spent the weekend in Rose-j burg visiting Mr. and Mrs. Edwin L. Knapp en route to Coos Bay j and back up the coast to their) home. Mrs. Lightner is a niece of Mrs. Knapp. Retired Navy Families Plan Potluck Dinner Retired Navy personnel are plan ning a pptluck dinner at Umpqua Park, past the Douglas County Fairgrounds. July 28 at 7 p.m., P. D. Hockersmith, Roseburg Navy Recruiting chief, said today. Hockersmith said such an affair lias ("never been planned in Rose burg before.- Letters have been mailed to -the known retired per sonnel and their families inviting them to the dinner and asking each family to bring food to add to the potluck fare. Hockersmith said arrangements have been made to use a portion of the county park for the get-together. Assault Penalty Given Lloyd L. Keeney, 47, Box 734 Roseburg, has been found guilty of assault and battery in District Court by Judge Gerald Hayes and given 30 days in the county jail and fined $105. Mr. and Mrs. Kant Phillips and son, Gerald, of Corvallis, spent the fourth of July holiday here visiting their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Keith Phillips and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth V. Ford. Mrs. Mildrtd Halay. Mrs. Leona Burgess, Mrs. Pearl Cleek and .Mrs. Helen Parke, of the DAV Auxiliary 24, Elmira, Ore. and Joe Cleek, also of Elmira and Charles McCoy of Roseburg assisted with the Voluntary Services department at the VA Hospital Sunday. Mrs. Hawley Counts and daugh ter. Miss Sharon, left Saturday night for Santa Barbara. Calif., where the latter will spend a va cation visiting Miss Sue Durnam, former Roseburg resident. Mrs. Counts is returning home after she takes her daughter to Santa Bar bara. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Singleton of VVhittier, Calif, have been divid ing their summer vacation be tween staying at Diamond Lake, where they have a housetrailer, and in Roseburg visiting the former's parents and brother, Mr. and Mrs. Waller Singleton and Ford Single ton. The latter three also enjoyed a week's slay at Diamond Lake in June, Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Young and daughter, Brooke, and son, Bernie, of this city have arrived in Hon olulu, where they have reserva tions at the Reef Hotel on Wai kiki Beach. The Youngs had been scheduled to sail on the Matson luxury liner, SS Lurline June 20, but on account of the steamship strike, were unable to go by ship'. They stayed in San Francisco un til they obtained reservations to go by plane. Mrs. Ida Smith of Monrovia. Calif, has arrived here to spend the summer visiting her daughter, Mrs. A. B. Smith and other rela tives. Mrs. W. Ernest Butler is ex pected to return to her home here in a few days. She spent the last month in Tucson, Ariz. with, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Mr. and Mrs.. J. A. Harding, and then spent the last several days in Portland attending to business. All former students of the Smick School are invited to attend a re union Sunday, July 9, at noon (standard time) at the Lloyd North home, 3'.i miles from Dixonville store on the Buckhorn Road. A potluck picnic dinner will be en joyed. Anyone desiring more in formation may call OR 3-5932. . Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Henry of Glendora. Calif, are spending three weeks building a summer place on Little River and visiting the latter's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Smith: the for mer's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ware, and his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gow, and with Mrs. Henry's niece, Mrs. Robert El liott, and family. Mr. and Mrs. G. M. lies and son Kim, spent the last two weeks vacationing at the Coast, Oregon Caves. Medford and at their sum mer place on Little River. Sunday they took Kim to Scout Camp at Siltcoos Lake. Shortly after his ar rival at Scout Camp, Kim suffered a fractured leg and was taken to the hospital in Florence for treat ment, lies drove to Florence Mon day to bring him back to Roseburg. Miss Gladys Strong and Mrs. Jessie Crenshaw have returned to ' their homes in Roseburg, following a slay in Portland attending the Oregon Music Teachers Associa- ; Hon convention. Mrs. Harry Gregg of San Diego, niece of Mrs. A. J. Young of this ! city, is reported to be continuing j to show improvement in health at Mercy Hospital, where she has been a medical patient since suf : fering a heart attack several weeks ago. Mr. and Mrs. Mark Perrault and children, Chelie, Steven and Jill, of Portland, spent the holiday week end and the Fourth of July here with the former's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. W. I.. Christensen, and sons, Jeff and Brad. The two families spent a part of the time enjoying a camp ing trip. Mrs. D. R. McKillop and son, Ross, have left for their home in Long Beach, Calif., following a visit here with the former's father, P. T. Bubar., following a visit here with the former's father, P. T. Bubar, on SE Lane Avenue. Also coming for a few days to visit her father was Mrs. Larry Watson and children, Mary Ann, Martha and Larry, of Eugene. Mrs. Vince Wroble and sons, Mark and Guy. of Roseburg. and the former's sister, of Grand Junc tion, Colo, have returned to their homes, following a month's vaca tion trip to Youngstown, Ohio, to visit their parents and a slop over to visit in Denver Colo.
