Says Oregon Is Sound Financially
The Slate of Oregon is in a sound
financial condition, according to
Howard Belton, slate treasurer.
Belton, a candidate for reelec
tion, visited in Roseburg Wednes
day. He met at a noon luncheon
with a small group of Republican

DENVER, Colo. (AP) Presi
dent Eisenhower decided to pay a
visit today to the Boy Scout Jam
boree near Colorado Springs, 50
miles south of Denver.
Eisenhower, relaxing in Colo
rado for a few days after attend
ing the Republican National Con
vention in Chicago, arranged to
travel by automobile to the
encampment of almost 57,000
scouts from all sections of the
country.

dent had no plans to make a
speech.
Eisenhower, who is honorary
president of the Boy Scouts, plans
to return to Denver immediately
after touring the encampment.
It was in this Colorado capital
that Eisenhower eight years ago
this month was planning the politi
cal campaign that took him to the
White House.

Belton, speaking of him as "the
type of public servant we should

Treasury Fond
Oregon has money in the treas
ury, Belton said. He reported that
'"a surplus now is building," but
that no prediction of the size of the
surplus can be made. "It will de
pend upon the slate's economy dur
ing the remainder of the year,"
he said.
He also told tire group that Ore
gon's credit is excellent. "Our
bonds are in demand and are com
manding a high rale of interest,"
he said. He warned, however, that
"as bonds go up, interest goes
down." extreme care should be
used in the issuance of more bonds.
Attractive Bonding
Bonding often is attractive, he
asserted, because federal matching
funds are available. "But the only
difference I can see between slate
bonds and federal bonds is that
federal money comes out of anoth
er pocket," Belton said. "There is

CHICAGO fAP) Rep. Waller
H. Judd of Minnesota, the Repub
lican keynote speaker, will place

name of Henry Cabot Lodge as
the prospective GOP vice-presidential
candidate.
Vice President Richard M. Nix
on said today that Judd would
make the nominating speech. Nix
on spoke to newsmen as he en
tered the Morrison Hotel for a
"Sunny-Side up Breakfast" for
Republican women.
The vice president also disclosed
that he will be introduced for his
acceptance speech tonight, as the
GOP presidential candidate, by
New York Gov. Nelson A. Rocke
feller. Nixon will speak without a text
in accepting the Republican presi
dential nomination tonight.
This announcement was made
today by his press secretary. Her
bert G. Klein, who said that not
even advance excerpts would be
available.
Nixon frequenlly has said he
feels he can do his best speaking
job without having to read a pre
pared text.
The talk is tentatively set for 9
p.m. Central Daylight Time.

his experience in the field of-state

Heart Attack Fatal
To Young Geologist
BAKER (AP) A heart attack
caused (he dealh of a 24-year-old
man on a geological expedition in
the mountains near here, the cor
oner's office reported Wednesday.
The victim was William. J. Hor
ner of Liberlyville, III. He died
Monday in the wilderness 50 miles
northwest of here on an expedi
tion for the Phelps-Dodge Co.' of
Douglas. Ariz.
It took 18 men, working in
shifts, to bring out his body.
