o Flight Recorder Off During Crash SEATTLE (AP) A flishl recorder was not working when a Boeing 707 jetliner crashed in Northern Snohomish County Oct. 19, the Civil Aeronautics Board said. The CAB, quoted in Aviation Daily, said the flight crew failed to switch on the recorder, which investigators had hoped would shed light on the mishap. The huge jet, on a training flight, crashed into the Stillagua mish River after undergoing a "violent maneuver" which caused three of its four engines to tear loose. Four men were killed and lour injured. It was reported that the Boeing Airplane Co. has ordered opera tion of the flight recorder on all future training flights. The governor made the presentation on behalf of the Physically Handi capped at a noon luncheon1 in Roseburg. (Paul Jenkins) Gov. Hatfield Would Accept Vice President Nomination Gov. Mark Hatfield said Thurs day he is not an active candidate for the vice presidency of the Unit ed States, but added it would be "very difficult to refuse if it were offered." "I'm not anticipating it," lint- field said, "but if the offer were 'made, I'd give it very careful con sideration." "And," he added, "I'd probably find it very difficult to turn down." The governor said he is not back ing any specilic candidate for the Republican nomination for presi dent in the 1900 general election. "I'm going to be neutral," he said, "because I feel the rank and file voter should make the de cision in the primary election without influence of any of our po litical figures." Asked what he thoueht of OOP chances in the presidential elec tion, naitieici saitl, "I'm very op timistic about Republican chanc es. ' "I don't know if the Republican party can pick up enough seals to control Congress, but I'm very optimistic about the presidential election possibilities, he declared. Hatfield will tour several areas of the state with presidential can didate Gov. Nelson Rockefeller of New York this weekend. Israel Coalition Set JERUSALEM (AP) Premier David B.en-Gurion is expected to form a three-party coalition gov ernment with an eight-vote ma jority in the Israeli Parliament. Authoritative sources said Ben Gurion's Mapai party still the nation's biggest after the general election Tuesday probably will join forces with the Progressives and the General Zionists. (Paul Jenkins) Roseburg Cleoo-up Program Impresses Governor; Pacific Plywood Plant Toured "I'm tremendously impressed with the clean-up program being carried out here," Gov. Mark Hat field said Thursday as lie toured the center of the Aug. 7 Roseburg disaster area. "And," the governor added, "I'm very happy to see the re building program being carried on here." "I feel the local officials and leaders have shown tremendous in sight in this situation by working on a long-range reconstruction program instead of just working for rapid rebuilding of the area." Hatfield said he didn't feel quali fied to comment on the particular plan of famed architect Richard Nuetra, but added he felt, "Any way which wood can be used through dramatic presentation to iurtner me lumber industry is ad vantageous to the entire Pacific Northwest." Following his lour of the disaster area, Hatfield, who had spoken on industry in Oregon, loured one of the major industries of the Rose burg area, Pacific Plywood Corp. He took an extensive tour of the plant with Pacific Plywood offi cials William Forrest and Del Mc Kay to see every product made at the Dillard plant.
