8 Th Newi-Review, Roteburg, Naval Investigation Begins In Patrol Bomber's Crash WHIDBEY ISLAND NAVAL AIR STATION, Wash. (AP) A Navy investigating board began probing Tuesday for the cause of a patrol bomber's takeoff crash which killed nine of the 10 men aboard. The P2V3 plunged Into a grove of trees near the south end of the runway after barely becoming air borne Monday on what was to have been an ordinary training flisht. Fire mushrooming from t h e right engine was blamed unoffi cially for the disaster. The victims all were regular Navy mon who had been in serv ice for a number of years. Only one, Aviation Machinist Mate l.C. John H. McMillan, 37, of Bremerton, was from the Pa cific Northwest. But all had been making their homes temporarily close to this Puget Sound island naval base about 60 miles north of Seattle. All were family men. Operations continued normally at the sprawling airbase but an air of sadness tinged all activi ties. McMillan's wife. Mary, said numbly after the tragedy she and her two children, Judy, 13, and Jerry, 15, planned to remain in nearby Oak Harbor "because Jack liked it o well." Survivor Badly Hurt The only survivor, Radioman Gerlando P. Court Denies Appeal SALEM (AP) The U.S. Su preme Court has denied an appeal from the Milwaukie, Ore., congre gation of Jehovah's Witnesses, the state Supreme Court was advised. The congregation sought to build I church in a residential area of Milwaukie. There have been three acquit tals. Leroy Jefferson, 37, of Portland, Ore., and Clarence Criss, 42, who is serving a narcotics sentence in McNeill Island penitentiary, were convicted of conspiracy charges here by a Federal District Court jury after a four-week trial. Judge Oliver Carter set sentencing for June 12. The same jury acquitted Leroy Lemons. 32. of Seattle, Wash.; Lulu Parker. 34. of Portland, and Richard Smith, 35, of Spokane Wash. it disagreed on charges against Ernest (Duke) Arnold, 36, of Port land; Fred Jones, 43, of Portland; Berthelma Nolen, 24, of Los An geles, and Mrs. Guadelupe Fadil la, 27, of Cuidad Acuna, Mexico. Their cases will be reset for trial. Four defendants from nearby Oakland pleaded guilty earlier to single charges. They are Elegan brothers, Clark, 34, and Gerald, 30. Jefferson and Catlett were ac cused specifically of hiring the shooting to death in Portland May 22, 1958, of Sylvester Jackson, but the murder charge was not pressed against Jefferson. Kath erine will be graduated in June from nurses training. Rosalyn Fogel, 5-year-old daugh ter of Dr. and Mrs. Leonard F. Fo gel, has recorded two sides of a record in preparation of a piano recital to be held in the near fu ture. Recorded were piano solos by Leota Stilwell and Maxwell Eck stein. At present, Rnsalyn is study ing compilations by Charles Vin cents "From the Notebook of Anna Magdelene Bach," wife of John Se bastian Bach. Rosalyn is privately tutored by Mrs. Jack (Dorothy) Suksdorf of Winston. The Rev. and Mrs. Robert Ham pel and Mrs. Bob Graves return ed recently from Nampa, Idaho, where they attended Alumni Day at Northwest Nazarene College. The Rev. Mr. Hempel acted as master of ceremonies at the ban quet and was also installed as alumni president. Her daughters, Lorna, who is a student at South ern Oregon College at Ashland; Ruby Anne and Martha, students at Douglas High, were all home ill the last week. Lorna returned to Ashland to resume her studies Monday and Ruby Anne and Mar tha returned to Douglas, High the first of the week. Red Boss Hints Enough Rockets MOSCOW (AP) Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev says "maybe before long" the Soviet Union will reduce its production of rockets. "We have good rockets and in the necessary quantity,'.' he said in a speech delivered to agricul tural workers in Kiev, in the Ukraine. The Western powers', he said, were particularly afraid of the "surging growth" of the Soviet economy "yet they are incapable of arresting our forward move ment." "This is what we say to lovew of military adventure," he added. "Do n)t touch us and we shall never touch you." The Soviet leader predicted that a summit meeting would be held even if the foreign ministers con ference in Geneva fails to yield great positive results. President Eisenhower told a news conterence last Wednesday that if anything came out of the Geneva conference which "gives enlarged nope lor decreasing ten sions in the world, than 1 think a summit meeting would become al most a foregone conclusion." Bonelli, a fugitive from Cali fornia courts, is a free man here. After seven months in jail, Bo nelli was freed Monday when For eign Secretary Manuel Tello signed a writ formally refusing the U.S. State Department's re quest for Bonelli's . extradition. Bonelli said before he left the prison that he hoped to return to California to face charges against him if he could be assured what he termed a fair trial. Bonelli, a former member of the California Board of Equalization, is charged in California's River side County with taking bribes in connection with issuance of liquor licenses. Bonelli has insisted that the charges against him were politi cally inspired.
