May 4, and Monday, May 11, at the
Douglas County Courthouse audi
torium at 7:30 p.m.
The nronram will Include films
on water safety, prepared by the
Ked cross. May 4, two turns wm
be shown, "Learning How to
Swim" and "Fundamentals of
Swimming." May 11, three films,
"Skilled Swimming," "It's Fun to
Swim" and "Oars and Paddles,"
are scheduled.
Tho programs are open to the
public, particularly to children
planning to participate In the Red
Cross program this June, with ne)
admission charge set.

Slates Banquet

At the April meeting of Suther
Un PTA, it was decided that the
annual Family Banquet will be
held Saturday. May 9. at 5:30 p.m.
with Mrs. George Enlow as gen
eral chairman.
Proceeds from this year's af
fair will go to the local scholar
ship fund. -
Winners of the recent health and
safety poster contest have been
announced as follows: Interme
diate Division, fourth through sixth
grade, Bobby Adams, first; Teresa
Bird, second, and David Sikstrom,
third.
In the Drlmary division, Lydla
Cantrell won first for the first
through the third grade section;
Julia Wilson, second, and Dawn
Frost, third.
Winning Dostcrs will go to the
Douelas County Council for judg
ing May 9. The best posters from
tha srouD will eo to the state. The
county winners will, bo displayed
at the fair.
New officers attending the state
convention in Corvallis Tuesday
and Wednesday were Mrs. Lila
Mansfield, president, and Mrs.
Flora Tavlor. first vice president.
Several delegates also went for one
day.
Leland Linn, superintendent, has
been reminding everyone of the
school election May 4.

Couple Sell Home

Mr. and Mrs. J. Kearby Masters,
Winston-Dillard residents, have
;old their home and acreage in
Winston Section to Mr. and Mrs.
Rnlnh l.vneh of Baker.
The Masters plan to vacate their
property by May 1 and visit a
month with their son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs, George W.
Bacher, and son, Bryce, in Grants
Pass. Both families will then move
to Yucalpa, Calif., for permanent
residence, rne uacners are leacn-
era in the Grants Pass bchool sys
tem. and will accent teaching con
tracts for the coming school year
in the vicinity of Yucaipa.
Nick Laurance. student at Doug
las Hleh. has returned home from
Portland after spending a weekend
at a state rifle match. Laurance
was one of 33 boys traveling to the
National Kille Assn. ot America.
The group is sponsored by the
Roseburg Rod and Gun Club.
The three eighth grade rooms
at Douglas High School are plan
ning an end-of-the-year picnic for
May 28 at Umpqua Park.
Bert Laurance, Douglas County
treasurer, spent several days last
week at the University of Oregon
attending the Oregon Finance
Assn.'s annual school.
Mrs. Robert Adams was absent
last week from her teaching posi
tion at DUlard Elementary School.

have returned to Winston to make
their home after spending the past

rifle shots with hidden gunmen
firing into a non-union coal opera
tion near here before dawn today.
No injuries were reported.
Mine operator Jack Blair said
"I am closing down the operation
and lnsvinff the country.
"t can't stand it anymore," he
said.

cream of celery soup
Two-thirds cup (small can) un
diluted canned milk
M teaspoon garlic salt
H teaspoon marjoram
Vi teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Add lemon juice to seafood
Combine tomato and celery soups
In saucepan. Add canned milk and
mix until smooth. Stir in seafood
