(AP) A possible lead towards develop inc a lone-sought vaccine against leprosy one of man's oldest scourges was reported today. I'roducini; a vaccine against the rat disease. ' 2. Perhaps ultimately developing a vaccine against the human mal ady. Dr. Y. T. Chang, of the National Institute of Arthritis and Metabol ic Uieseases and the American Leprosy Foundation, gave this out line in a report to the 43rd annual meeting of the Federation of Amer ican Societies for Experimental Bi ology: The bacillus that causes human leprosy is one of the wiliest and I most elusive organisms of the germ world. As a result, House GOP chief Charles A. Halleck of Indiana said he is going to inform the Demo cratic high command in the House that there will be no organized Republican opposition. The bill for creation of a special ll-member commission is spon sored by Senate Democratic lead er Lyndon Johnson of Texas. It has passed the Senate. Halleck announced his position after the regular weekly meeting 1 of Republican leaders with Eisen hower. I Hut Halleck said he has consid : erable qualm about the matter, especially if the projected unem ployment study should get in the way of action on such items as an area redevelopment bill and hous ing legislation plan. If Republicans had originated I the proposal for a commission i study, Halleck said, it would be I termed another stall. the bug into outside growth be cause, aside from possibly help ing towards such an ultimate ob jective as producing a vaccine, such laboratory culturing of the germs would allow a more detailed study of the bacteria and would provide a means for rapid testing of possible new antilcprosy drugs. Attempts to grow rat leprosy germs outside the living animal i body have, until now, been almost equally tough. Growth Down Some investigators- have coaxed some growth in cell cultures, but the amount of bacterial multipli cation was very limited. Chang has come up with one culture in which the number of germs lias increased seven limes in seven weeks. This is still not as fast as the germ multiplies inside the body, so attempts are being made to step up the rate. If these attempts are successful, said Chang, it may be possible to produce a vaccine asjainsl rat leprosy just as the polio vaccine is produced from large cultures of polio virus. Such a vaccine might point the way to a similar pre ventive for the human disease.
