The Democrats came out on top In 24 governorship races to the Republicans 8 and were leading in Nebraska, the sole contest un decided in the early afternoon. Four of the Republican victories were won by ousting Democrats, cutting down the Democrats' mar gin. That left the rampaging Demo crats sure of controlling 33 of the nation's 48 statehouses, and hope ful of 34. They held 29 before election day. But they lost the No. 1 guberna torial prize, the governorship of New York. Nelson Rockefeller, millionaire political amateur, ousted Democratic Gov. Averell llarriman. The three other governorships lost by the Democrats were in Arizona, Rhode Island and Ore gon. Democrats retaliated for the loss of New York by capturing California, the second biggest state, and in today's late count strengthened their already firm hold on the far West by captur ing the closely contested races in Wyoming and New .Mexico.
