Myrtle Creek Fail Festival Time Near; Mine Girls Seek Li. GINGER BAY By MRS. RUTH EVANS Merchants and clerks in Myrtle Creek have donned western regalia in keeping with the pioneer theme of the annual Myrtle Creek Fall Festival, slated for Aug. 15-17. Meanwhile,. the list of queen can didates for the festival Was filled out and a riding club, the Myrtle Creek Saddle Pals, continued prep arations for their rodeo, which will be staged in conjunction with the festival. Nine girls had entered the race for queen when entries closed last Saturday. Eight are from Myrtle Creek. One candidate, Raelene Bryant, hails from Canyonville. Raelene is sponsored by Carl Hill's Furni ture and Hardware and Binder's Clothing, both Canyonville. General Chairman Gerry War ren said winners will be selected on the basis of ticket sales. Members of the saddle club said five events are scheduled for the rodeo, set for Aug. 16-17. The club and the Myrtle Creek Chamber of Commerce are co-sponsors. Rodoo Events Set Events on the rodeo program Include . saddle bronc riding, bare back riding, calf roping, wild cow milking and bull riding. Four special races also will be si aged. They are the girls' saddle horse race, boys' saddle horse race, open race and a pony express race in which contestants ride around the track, changing mounts at the start of each lap. Other races will be held as time permits. Don Miller, Frenchglen, will furnish stock for the rodeo. - Total purse offered will be $500 plus entry fees. U.S. District Judge Charles F. McLaughlin gave him a suspend ed 30 day jail sentence and im posed a $500 fine. The appeals court, in reversing the conviction, directed the dis trict court to enter a judgment of acquittal. Brief Opinion The appellate court said in a brief unsigned opinion that from the record it appeared to he clear that Miller "had a right to leave the hearing thinking that the di rection to answer was still sus pended, if not abandoned." Miller whose plays have won a Pulitzer Prize and other awards, was called before the committee Logging Victim's Rites Set Tuesday At Drain Funeral services for Wesley Hick man. 33. who died Tuesday as the result of a logging accident, will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Mills Funeral Service chapel in Drain. The Rev. C. E. Kcklin will of ficiate. Interment will follow at Drain Cemetery. Hickman was born in Los An geles on Jan. 21, 1925. He was married to Marian St. Claire on April 23, 1944 at Eugene. The fam ily had resided in the Drain area for the past 12 years after moving there from Springfield. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Sharon and Margaret, and two sons, Rian and Kevin, all of Drain: his father, E. R. Hick man, Los Angeles, one brother, Edward A. Hickman, Los Angeles, and two sisters, Mrs. Jeannette Anderson, Eugene, and Wandera Hickman. Los Angeles. Merchants are offering prizes for the oldest items in several categories, including household ap pliances, dishes, record players shoes, dresses, hats, blouses, stamps and envelopes. A prize also is offered for the oldest envelope vith Oregon territorial postal markings. Stores offering prizes include Western Auto Supply, Rice's Mus ic Center, Hasco Radio-tlectric and Golden Rule. Among, window displays are a collection of old guns by Myr tle Creek Hardware, an antique car by Young's Chevrolet and an DONNA SWINNEY in June 1956 during an investiga tion into allegedly fraudulent pro curement and misuse of passports. Miller was an applicant for a pass port at the time, but during court arguments in Miller's case the government never contended that he ever fraudulently obtained or misused a passport. Miller answered about 200 ques tions in the committee hearing and acknowledged that he had supported Communist causes in the past. He balked only at nam ing Communist writers with whom he said he attended five or six meetings in 1947. Miller said his conscience would not permit him to use the names of other persons and bring trouble to them. Would Not Support Reds Miller also told the committee that he would not now support the Communist causes he had backed in the past. Seven of the appellate court's nine judges heard Miller's appeal in June. All nine concurred in Thursday's decision. The opinion said Miller urged WEBER'S FRI. Judge Dismisses 2 Civil Actions Two civil suits resulting from highway accidents have been dis missed with prejudice by Circuit judge cari t. winmeny. Frank Coplin this spring filed a claim for $6,500 general and $130 special damages against Everett Morlin, a truck driver. Coplin alleged negligence on the part ot the trucker in a July 7 l5ti collision between his car and Martin's vehicle. He claimed the truck was driven across the center line into the path of his car near the S. Stephens St. inter section wan Highway vs. William L. Wilson and Allstate Insurance Co., in a damage suit against Claude and Carmen Cox, alleged negligence in a two car collision in Oakland on March 30. 1956.
