Each day, the clerks are awarding a bond to the person who locates a clerk in a Roseburg store who has the answer to the day's key question. Monday, Mrs. Klingman only had to quiz four clerks before, she found the right one. Tuesday, it. took 22 queries. The key question is: Are you a union retail clerk? Hatfield Explains Office Functions Secretary of State Mark Hatfield explained the functions of his of fice at a Roseburg Kiwanis lunch eon Tuesday. He told of how he reorganized the office by letting the addressing of the voters election pamphlets out on contract and disposing of "tons" uf outmoded records. When talking about the disposing of the records Hatfield said "We convey ed the idea to other departments and they followed suit." Hatfield explained that the sec retary of state is on the board of control, state land board and state banking board. "We use so much of the cost of operating out govern ment because of outmoded tech niques. We must keep abreast of new methods," Hatfield said. The secreatary went on to say that because of "dirty" politics he could not replace old bookkeeping machines in his office with IBM equipment, saving money and ex panding services. Hatfield attended a two - hour "meet-the-public" session at Uinp qua Park Tuesday evening. Williams, Symington Come Through Election Uncathed ? ' .' , V. Two Roseburg Doctors Assume Business Name Doctors A. B. Munroe and J. M. Hutson of Roseburg have filed an assumed business name certificate with the county clerk for the Rose burg Medical-Dental Clinic at 680 SE Jackson St. The clinic will be devoted to med ical and surgical services, accord ing to the certificate. At tne same time, the Dhvsicians and their wives, Mrs. KldVence Munroe and Mrs. Martha Hutson. filed a certificate to enter the busi ness of renting office space. The twin triumphs highlighted primary contests in four states. There were no major upsets. The advance favorites generally pre vailed in balloting that took place in Kansas and West Virginia as well as Michigan and Missouri. The 47-year-old Williams beat back his first intraparty challenge in 10 years to win the Democrat ic nomination for a sixth trip to the governor's mansion. He quick ly rolled to a 6-1 margin over Wil liam L. Johnson, a radio broad caster from Ironwood, and held it as the vote total mounted. Williams' Republican opponent m November will be Paul 1. Bag well, 44, a Michigan State Univer sity professor who was unopposed. for his party s nomination. Pottor Nominated Sen. Charles E. Potter gained GOP renomination without oppo sition too. He faces the prospect of a general election race with Lt. Gov. Philip A. Hart, a Williams running mate who captured the Democratic senatorial nomination. It was strictly no contest in Mis souri where Symington, 57, jumped to a runaway lead and buried op ponents Lawrence L. Hastings and Lamar W. Dye. Symington's November foe will be Miss Hazel Palmer, retiring president of the National Assn. of Business and Professional Women. Former Rep. Jennings Randolph, 56. and Rep. Robert C. Byrd, 40, won Democratic senatorial pri maries in West Virginia. Randolph will face Sen. John D. Hoblitzell Jr., who" was unopposed for the Republican nomination. Byrd's November match will be with Sen. Chapman Revercomb, who had no opposition for Repub lican renomination. The Kansas nominations were highlighted by the Republican pri mary for governor, won by Clyde Reed Jr. of Parsons. Reed, 44, a newspaper publisher, piled up a better than 3-1 edge over former Gov. Fred Hall. Gov. George Docking, the first Democratic governor in Kansas in 20 years, had no opposition in his bid for renomination. Two Skagit County Men Killed In Plane Crash EVERETT (API Two Skagit County men were killed Tuesday mgnt when their light plane dove into Puget Sound between Cama no Island and Warm Beach. They were Ernest J. Olmsted, owner of the Olmsted Trucking Co. of Mount Vernon, and Howard Lystad, Stanwood, the firm's chief dispatcher. The plane was headed north over Port Susan Bay, Snohomish County sheriff's deputies reported. The craft suddenly turned in a semi-circle and fell into the shal low waters. Deputies attached a cable to the craft and were to pull it into shore on the high tide. Donna Clough To Co To Cuba To Teach School Donna Cloueh. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Huron W. Clough, 1108 SE Washington Ave., will leave Thursday for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to spend a year ther teach ing school. Miss Clough, a 1948 graduate of Roseburg High School, taught Eng lish at Roseburg High School dur ing the past school year. She will be a business education instructor in Cuba. Her new teaching post will be at William T. Sampson School, a hieh school for children of Navy personnsl. She will spend a few davs at Washington. D. C then disembark for Guantanamo Bay from Norfolk. Va. Miss Clough is planning to re main in Cuba until next summer, when she will return to Roseburg. Guantanamo Bay lies about 500 air miles from Havana in southwest ern Cuba, she said. Her father currently is a county commissioner. Long Distance Rower Hits Immigration Snag ABERDEEN (AP) Rav land, the long-distance rower, was in the custody of U.S. Immigra tion and Naturalization Service agents here Wednesday. The intrepid oarer, who was at tempting to make it the 363 water miles from Seattle to Portland, was apprehended by the agents when he pulled his 12-foot boat into Westport Tuesday night, Walter Douglas, U.S. Immigra tion agent here, declined comment on the action Tuesday night Hospital News KANSAS PICNIC SUNDAY The annual Kansas nicnic for former Kansans living in Douglas Ccunty will be held in Umpqua Park Sunday, according to W. '3 Bid Openings Postponed On Prineville Project PORTLAND (AP) The Bureau of Reclamation Tuesday post poned bid openings on the Prineville- Dam Project, because of a heavy construction tie-up through out Oregon. The bureau said it postponed the opening from Aug. 12 to Aug. 26 at the request of the Associated General Contractors, which said the dispute made it impossible to compute labor costs. An estimated 25.000 men have been idled by the dispute between the AUC, an employer group, and the Union of Hoisting and Port able Engineers.
