RYAN AP Foreign Nsws Andytr NABLUS, Jordan I Gamal Abdel Nasser proclaimed himself a man of peace this week and virtually cailed for the assassina tion of Kins Hussein of Jordan. It is the first time Nasser per sonally has suggested assassina tion for the Joranian King, al though his "Voice of the Arabs" propaganda radio station has done so often. The President of the United Arab Republic, rn his annual Lgyptian Independence Day speech, called expressly on the people of Jeru ' saicm, Nablus and Kamallah the main Palestinian towns in Jordan to heed his words. Refers To Hussein Nasser pointedly referred to the late King Abdullah, Hussein's grandfather, and to the year 1951 in which Abdullah was assissinatcd by Arab Palestinians. He accused Hussein of following in his grand father's footsteps by calling on Britain lor aiu. Nasser's suggestion, however in direct, could not possibly be lost on his hearers Hussein is in line for his grandfather s fate. "We call for peace and we make every effort to strengthen this peace," said Nasser. But there was no hint of compromise in his as sertion that "the British armed aggression against Jordan will be defeated the American armed aggression against Lebanon will be defeated." Should Nasser call now for dis cussions on the Lebanese and other Middle East problems, the West might be justified in considering he is seeking only breathing space in PLANS ALASKA VISIT SALEM (AP) Gov. Robert D. Holmes will fly to Alaska soon as Snrt of a campaign for closer ties ctwecn Oregon and Alaska. He will go to Fairbanks, Anchor age and Juneau. Before leaving, he will meet here with state and community leaders to encourage commerce and tourist trade between the two states. which to prepare for his next as sault. Crisis Getting Deeper There are already signs that the crisis is getting deeper. Nablus and other cities in the Palestine sector of Jordan are pat ently nervous. There are numerous check points on the road from Amman, and so far government se curity forces seem to have matters under control. But there are re ports the pro-Nasser elements have arms cached, waiting for the sig nal for action. The signal may be some time in coming. Nasser's speech indicated he is interested first in getting the Amer icans out of Lebanon, then push ing that country into his so-called "liberated Arab" bloc. The tone of his speech gave the impression he does not want to bite off too much at one time. He still must digest the situation in Iraq, and still, must deal witn ine situation ne created in Lebanon which brought American intervention. ft begins to look as if it will be a long time before the Americans and British can withdraw troops from the Middle East. The with drawal might be a signal for a new Nasser assault. Wholesale Food Prices Ease Some This Week NEW YORK (AP) Wholesale food prices, as measured by the Dun and Hradslreet lood index, eased somewhat this week. At $6.62 the index compared with $6.65 a week ago and was 4.3 per cent higher than the $6.35 figure in the similar week last J rear. This week's reading was the owest since the week ended June 10. The index represents the total cost at wholesale of one pound each of 31 foods in general use. Higher this week were bellies, eggs, raisins and prunes. Lower were flour, wheat, rye. oats, beef, hams, sugar, steers ana nogs.
