which Congress can agree on to
combat recession There is no
question of the worthiness of the
Yaquina and Siuslaw projects, and
it will be particularly damaging
to these two areas if the veto is

Vans, of Oranu Pa, Ore., an
ex-convict and wiretap expert,
ued mure than two tons ut
entific euipmenl recently in
an attempt to convert inmate at.
Eastern State Penitentiary.
'lhe 39-year-old ordained minis-!
ter, once hired by West Coast
Kambler Mickey Cohen because of
his wiretapping skills, has been
lecturing at the prison (or the past
three days. ,
He used the equipment, which t
includes stereophonic amplifiers, j
broadcasting and recording sets I
and a machine called a Tela cod!
that produces nearly i million
volts of electricity, to emphasize
his argument that a Christian life
is the only life.
Holds Experiment
At one point in his lecture, j
Vaus pressed a button, causing
electricity to leap from the coil.
He then asked for a volunteer to I
hold the coil during a repeat of
the demonstration. One of the 125 1
prisoners present held the coil1
which, when activated, merely
hummed ominously.
Vaus then used amplifiers to
indicate the presence of sound un
heard by human ears.
"These experiments show that
many times there are things you
know exist that can't be seen, felt
or heard. It's the same thing with
religion," he said.
Vaus. who after his release
from prison in 1U49 was convert
ed by evangelist Billy Graham,
told the inmates that it was while
attending college in his home
town that he tried to prove reli
gion and science could not go
hand in hand. He said he finally
came to the belief that each was
necessary to the other.
Involved With Cohen
It was after the war. he said,
that he first became involved with
Cohen.
"Cohen called me to his home.
He said he heard that I had a
reputation as a wiretapper among
Hollywood notables and he wanted
me to locate a microphone he
knew police had hidden in his
home.
"I told him I wasn't interested
but he began pulling $1 00 bills off
a roll and I soon became interest
ed. " Vans said.
At the end of his talk, Vans
aked the prisoners to raise their
hands in a gesture declaring
themselves for. Christ. About a
dozen inmates raised their hands
and the session ended with pray
ers fur the new converts.
