Into Government
Red Tape Deadlock
WASHINGTON ' A lady sir-
! affe with an unladylike appetite
has eaten her way into s new
deadlock with tht Department ot
Agriculture.
Ihe department wanta to collect
$2. 100 mostly for food from her
owners before releasing her from
the Clifton, X. J., government
quarantine station.
Authorities said it cbsta as much
as $125 a month to feed her at
the quarantine station. The re-,
mainder went for housing in a 1
heated barn. i
The giraffe was brought to the
Tnited States in September. 1956, 1
bv a private zoo at Boca Raton,
Fla. i
The quarantine branch took the
view she could be released only
to an approved zoological park
under acceptable government con
trol. The Agriculture Department
said it was afraid the giraffe, al
though free from disease, might1
be a potential carrier of foot and
mouth disease. j
The U. S. Court of Appeals ruled
last month that the secretary of
Agriculture acted arbitrarily in
refusing to let the giraffe move on
to the zoo.
Krnest C. Tucker, attorney rep
reenting the private zoo, took the
court's release order to the De
partment of Agriculture. lie re
ported: "They looked at it and said that
was nice. But then they said Ihey
wanted $2,100 before I could have'
her.
"It's like being in jail. The

Odds Are That
Billy Nunn Won't
Keep Death Date
SALEM Billy Junior Nunn
is scheduled to die in the prison
gas chamber a week from Friday
for the murder in Jackson County'
of 14-year-old Alvin Eacret.
But the odds are that he won't.)
even though prison Warden Gar-,
ence T. Gladden is proceeding
with plans for the execution.
The execution probably will be
delayed while the courts decide
whether (iov. Robert D. Holmes
can commute the sentence be
cause of the governor's opposition
to capital punishment.
The parents of the Eacret boy
brought suit in Jackson County
court, which issued a restraining
order to prevent the governor
from commuting the sentence.
This order is temporary.
The case has been transferred
to Marion County Circuit Court,
where Atty. lien. Robert Y.
Thornton has asked that -the suit
be dismissed on grounds that the
court lacks jurisdiction.
The Kacrels probably will an
swer Thornton next week, after
which there will be oral argu
ments.
Since those arguments probably
would be held after the execution
date, some action would have to
be taken to postpone the execu
tion. Orval Thompson, legal advisor
to the governor, said that under
the restraining order, the gover
nor couldn't even postpone the
execution until after the court de
cides the issue.
But either the Jackson or Ma
rion County circuit courts could
postpone trie date of execution.

WASHINGTON An affi

Kohler Co. officials shot a man

Lyman C. Conger, the com

accused in the affidavit, angrily
denounced the allegation as "a
complete and utter fabrication."
"If it's made under oath and
submitted to this committee it is
perjury." Conger said. He said if
anyone makes the statement with
out the immunity that surrounds
congressinn;il hearings "I will sue
him for libel."
The committee is investigating
violence in the four-year-old slrike
against Kohler, Wisconsin bath
