Junior High Basketball 'Y' Managers Needed Wayne Schulz, Roseburg YMCA director, has issued a call for adults interested in managing teams in the YMCA junior high school level recreation basketball league, scheduled to get underway Saturday. Schulz said about five respon sible adults are needed to serve as managers. He said sponsors for the 10 teams slated to engage in loop play are lined up, as have full rosters for the teams. Managers will serve somewhat in the capacity of coaches, and must be present at all of their teams' games. AH games in the junior high league will be played on Saturday mornincs. Axemen, Grant Keep Up Wins By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS South Eugene won its eighth straight game Tuesday night, as two Portland schools also con tinued prep basketball winning ! streaks. j South Eugene picked up its vic tory1 by a big margin by downing I Aioany oi-ai. In the Portland league, power ful Grant ran its season record to 6-0 with a 72-58 victory over Madison. Undefeated Roosevelt got its sixth triumph by a smaller mar gin, 45-40 over Franklin. Open PIL The Portland League became a four-way tie for the lead with Grant, Roosevelt, Cleveland and Wilson each with a 2-0 record. Jefferson tripped Benson 54-47. Cleveland edged Washington 56-52 and Wilson toppled Lincoln 56-41. The Tualatin-Yamhill Valley League also moved into confer ence play Tuesday night. Three of the games were won by large margins, as McMinnville trimmed Forest Grove 55-37, Ti gard romped by Oswego 73-51 and Tillamook downed Newberg 44-20. In the league's other contest, St. Helens dropped Oregon City 57-51. SLABS ENDS Death Of PCC Mourned; OSC ' By JACK HEWINS Associated Press Sports Writer SEATTLE 1 People who laugh at funerals may enjoy this; others please weep quietly. The basketball coaches of the Pacific Coast Conference labored for years to obtain a round-robin schedule. Now that they have it the PCC is crumbling under their feet and one of the things that put the blast on the conference was objection to a round-robin football schedule. So this may be the first and last winter you'll have a chance to see 'em. The two best big time teams on the Coast may be the San Francisco Dons and Seattle Chieftains. Almost everybody's favorite to wield the baton in the PCC bas ketball swan song is UCLA, which tied last year with Washington for second place. Johnny Woodcn's Bruins may be potent enough to deserve the rating but we believe Slats Gill will have his Oregon State Beavers at the top of the heap when the season closes. It should be a tight two team race. Rest Uncertain The rest of them you can stir into a salad bowl and take your pick. Most are relying on sopho more talent and the coach who develops his rookies soonest could grab that third spot or better, We'll take 'em this way after Ore gon State and UCLA: Defending champion California, Southern Cal, Washington, Idaho, Stanford, Oregon, and Washington State. Next time you're in t philan thropic mood, start a fund to build gymnasiums for the high schools at Molson and Easton.
