I An infestation of field mice is costing Eastern Oregon farmers millions of dollars. It apparently is worst in Kla math County, where the county agricultural agent, C. A. Hender son, estimates damage at $2,500, 000 to potatoes, seed crops, hay and pastures. The infestation exlriula into northern California and eastward from here, perhaps into Idaho, Henderson said. He said the field mouse popu lation jumped abnormally this season. He estimated there are' up to 10,000 mice per acre on some of the 400.000 cultivated acres in Klamath County. That's a mouse every four square feel 1 in those fields. Don't Menace Health j Public Health officials say that, so far they do not menace health. But they could become a prob-, lem if they tried to move into i buildings this winter. The officials are also watching closely for any j outbreak of disease among the mice. ! One of the first fears was of bubonic plague, which rodents of the west have carried in the past via lice. Dr. William Jellison of the U.S. Disease Laboratory at Hamilton, Mont., said, however, that he found no bubonic plague, and in fact did not find 'any lice on 50 mice caught in 'Klamath County. Officials also are watching for a disease that could cut down the mouse population. So far none has appeared. C. D. ertrees. assistant to Hen derson, said that one day this week he searched all day and did not find a dead mouse. Officials have not determined the reason for the sudden jump in the mouse population. Preda tors owls, hawks and others appear in normal numbers, al though perhaps fatter than usual because of the happy hunting. The mice even , are breeding later than officials expected. Cold weather has come on, but that has not slowed the increase. Fe males caught last week proved to be pregnant. And mici have a gestation period shorter than three weeks.
