Rocker Firing
Proves Failure
At Florida Site
MlSSltE TEST CENTER, Cape
Canaveral, Fla. I A rocket
believed to be an Army jupuer
lit up the launching area Friday
nioht in an annarpnt flame-out
that failed to lift it off the ground.
Another missile built to launch
i oanh satellite the Navy's
ti.nnu.nt sat inrt nn its ramD
despite two surges of activity that
were either tiring preparations or
rehearsals.
Information officers at nearby
Patrick Air Force Base were as
mute as the monster rockets about
developments, but if usual proce
dure rules, firing would be sus
pended during the weekend.
Diehard rocket fans and news
menstill were squinting at the
closely guarded launching area
from four-mile range Friday night
when someone yelled prematurely
"There it goes!"
Th mi.cilp standing in the
Jupiter and Redstone rocket firing
area glowed Driuianuy in we
darkness and smoke rose around
it. But when the ngnt mea out,
th mi.cilo .till hadn't cone anv-
where. Veteran observers said it
appeared to have mislired.
A flajne-out, in which a missile's
fuel burns out on the launching
site, is not necessarily disastrous
to the rocket and sometimes indi
cates some failure of mechanism
or fuel feed.
