12 Th Nwt-Revlw, Roieburg, Or. Mon. Oct. 21, 1957 Zoo Manager To Co After Penguins HONOLULU W Jack Mark, director of the Portland City Zoo, has left for the U.S. Navy Base at JlcMurdo Sound in Antarctica. He plan to get 20 Emperor penguins and bring them back for the Portland and San Diego, Calif., zoos. Marks, who arrived here Thurs day, said the birds will be re turned home in individual crates on a Military Air Transport plane, with special water spray cooling equipment. He hopes that some special pen guin girdles he bad made in Port land will help in capturing the birds and returning them. Marks said they are "sort of like a strait-jacket" and that al though it is his first try at bag ging penguins with such girdles, "I hope to come out without any broken bones." He said that despite poor luck in previous attempts to bring the birds from the South Pole area by ship, "1 feel we have a good chance of getting them home alive and in good condition by air." Special quarters with controlled temperatures will be provided at Portland and San Diego for the penguins. A shipment of 135 registered Am erican Brahman cattle recently was made to the Ministry of Agriculture in Bangkok. Thailand. The purhred Brahmans were purchased in Flor ida, Louisiana and 'lexas.
