Ecklund And Simons Urge Strong Community Support "It's up to (hem but it's also up to you." That was the charge given the community Thursday at the week ly meeting of the Roseburg Ro tary Club by new football coach Brad Ecklund. He said the team would "put out a mile more effort if the grand' stands are filled. At the same time, he said, "you fill those stands and I promise you'll see things you've never seen. About this year's future, F.cklund jsaid merely: "With a few breaks, I'm sure we'll make you proud I of us." I The new coach also outlined the method he has been using to whip his team into shape. Athletic Director Lome (Dutch) 1 Simons joined Ecklund on the bill in calling for community support. "If you want a good program, i you're going to have to support it," he said. "Don't underestimate your I presence at football games." Eight Lettermen Back As Drain Eyes Sutherlin Drain football hopes this year go as far as the first team. Coach Frank Doyel has only eight lettermen back to compete in the always-tough District 5-A-2 League. The second team looks to be weak at this time, although the presence of 235-pound John Ward at one of the tackle positions helps. Backs "Rustie" Painter and Dick Crites are expected to carry the main load in the backfield, but junior halfback Terry Watson has been looking good in pre-season drills. Another top-flight lineman back this season is Frank Jacobs, who was a second team choice in the Emerald League last season. Lettermen back this year are Crites and Painter in the backfield, senior Jacobs and Bob Gordineer at the ends, seniors Jerry Nash and Ward at the tackles and sen iors Eddie Johnston and Tom Leach at the guards. Mrs. Ed Klemmer was lops in class B with a score of 52-17-35, while Mrs. Sam Kendall Was win ner in class C, with a score of 65-29-36. There will not be pairings dur ing the Fall Handicap Tournament that is now being held at the Coun try Club, so those not playing in the tourney will make their own S airings. Next weeks play will also e a Sweepstakes Tournament and will be held on the front nine. Pairings for the Fall Handicap have been announced with the final qualifying rounds turned in. Mrs. Sid Liekon was medalist for the tourney with a score of 84-9-75. De fending champion is Mrs. James Hughes. All first round matches must be played before Thursday Sept. 19. Held to only four hits by rookie Danny McDevitt, they paired 'em with walks and beat the Brooks 2-1 on Del Crandall's pinch single in the ninth. With second-place SI. Louis idle, the Braves padded their National League lead for the first time in nine days, gaining a five-game bulge with 15 lo play and reduc ing their pennant-clinching magic number to 11. Any combination of Braves' vic tories and St. Louis defeats total ing 11 starts the beer flowing in Milwaukee. Scrap To Be Settled The American League should settle its pennant scrap in the next 24 hours in a two-game show down between the New York Yank ees and Chicago's second - place White Sox opening at Yankee Sta dium today. The Sox, who whipped Boston 7-1 yesterday while the Yankees were idle, are five games behind with 16 left (two more than the Yankees have). Only one other game was played in the majors, with Detroit defeating Washington 8-5. The Braves, who had lest five of eight, had to scrap all Ihe way against McDevitt, 24. They collect ed eight walks, but managed hits in the fourth and ninth scor ing in each frame. The Dodgers scored in the sec ond off Bob Buhl.' Little Trouble This effort by Portland, which all but decided the Pacific Coast League pennant, leaves four games to be played. Hollywood comes to Portland for the final series opening on Friday the 13lh. Portland's final victory over Vancouver was one of its best hitting efforts. Titlist Defense By Braves Dim The 1956 state A-2 football cham pions, the Reedsport Braves, ap pear to be in for a long season. Coach Rudy Ruppe has only one lettermen from lust year's team returning for another campaign. He is tackle Francis Tresler, a one- year veteran. Attempting to fill the shoes of Shrine halfbacks Allen Leach and Roy Burns are, Jerry Abbott and Leland Koepke. These two, along with fullback Clayton Ladd, an other non-letterman, are expected to carry the main load this sea son in the tough District 2-A-2. Ruppe had a total of 39 players report for the first week of prac tice and although the team is fight ing hard, they are understandably expected to fall short of last years record of 11 wins and one loss. Coach Ruppe has slated that this year will have to be a rebuilding year, with looks toward next sea son. Assisting Ruppe on the team will be Jack Blum and Jack Meltcbar ger.
