Tremendous Power Of Atomic Energy Told By Scientist By RENNIE TAYLOR AP Scitno Rtportcr SAN FRANCISCO itf If all the oceans were gasoline, they could supply only a liny traction of the energy that will be available in the age of thermonuclear power, says a leading atomic scientist. Each gallon of water on earth contains enough heavy hydrogen to produce, theoretically, the amount of energy in 265 gallons of gasoline. This would supply the world's power requirements for a trillion years. And there would be plenty of water left over, because if all this heavy hydrogen were extracted from the seas and burned in re actors, the volume of the oceans would be reduced only by one six thousandth of present size. Ihese figures were given by Dr. HerVrt York, director of the Uni versity of California's Livermore Laboratory in an address Wednes day night to the Western Elec tronics Show and Convention. Ine l.ivermorc Laboratory is the place where much ullra-secret work is being done on the hydrogen bomb and related nuclear problems. Researchers are making prog ress toward the age of nuclear fusion but they still have a long way to go before achieving that goal, Or. York said. Asked as to the prospects of thermonuclear power before the year 2000, the scientist said it was an even bet. Outer Space Doom Call Bounces To Wrong TV SAN JOSE. Calif. I Jesse Ungari and his wife, Helen, heard a background voice swell through a KI'IX television commercial. "We are calling you from outer space. We are going to destroy your city in 24 hours," they heard it say. Ungari noted the time was 9:32 p m (l'DT). Ungari, oil company marketing specialist and naval reserve ra dioman, reported this to the San Jose Mercury. A spokesman at KP1X said a freakish signal bounce from a dis tant station possibly filtered a space adventure program into the Ilngaris' set. sou) iocaut tr ' SUTHERLIN FEED & SEED Surherlin NICHOL'S STORE Brockway C & S FEED STORE Oakland WOODRUFF FEED & SEED Myrtlt Creek
