Society Barred DiVs 'Honesty Ex-Pal Declares Tutf. Aug. 13, 1957 The News-Review, Roieburg, Or. 3 WASHINGTON I - Anthonyi Doria, onetime pal of racketeer Johnny Dio in the labor move-! ment, described Dio Monday as a frustrated man who sought tor become an honest labor leader but 1 "society wouldn't let him." Ana. Dona testified to the Sen ate Rackets Investigating Com mittee, Dio himself has told him within recent weeks that he had nothing to do" with the acid blinding of labor columnist Victor Riesel. Dio had opportunity last week to give the senators his own ver sion of what he aimed to do, and what he has done. But he pleaded the Fifth Amendment to all major questions, saying his answers might tend to incriminate. Dio is under indictment on con spiracy charges in the blinding last year of Riesel. Doria said he visited Dio's home recently and asked the racketeer about the Riesel case, and got the answer that the charge if "abso lutely a farce." "He knows nothing about it," Doria added. He said he ' didn't ask whether Dio knows who was responsible for dashing searing acid into Rie sel's eyes, and that Dio suggest ed no names to him. Doria said he personally has been contacted four times by FBI agents questioning him about the case and that this has convinced him "there is no evidence against Johnny Dio." Doria was until last March secretary-treasurer of the Allied In dustrial Workers Union, formerly the old AFL United Auto Work ers Union (UAW). Doria left the union under pres sure. Questions as to his fitness to hold union office had been raised in the AFL-CIO, partly be cause of his associations with Dio. There was testimony last week that Doria agreed to resign on condition that the union pay him $80,000 and give him a Cadillac car. He has been paid $25,000 and contends the union still owes him $55,000. Meany Opposes 5th Amendment For Labor Chiefs CHICAGO Wl AFL-CIO Presi dent George Meany said Monday "there should not be any change" In the AFL-CIO policy of coop erating with congressional com mittees investigating labor. Meany upheld the policy of co operation at a news conference after there had been reports that some labor leaders wanted to at tack the U. S. Senate' Rackets Committee. Meany told newsmen that the Senate committee "did a good job as far ai it went." He added that exposure of corruption is good for labor "as well as anyone else." Meany said he had not heard of reports that some labor chiefs were dissatisfied with the AFL CIO policy of cooperation. These unnamed leaders had Been reported miffed because the committee investigation of man agement and labor practices had put the accent on labor. Aaainit 5th Amendment "We'll cooperate legislatively or any other way, Meany said. But he said his organization will "re sist any attempt to fasten restric tive laws upon labor as a whole because of the sins of a few." Meany also said that he stands firm on the AFL-CIO policy against labor leaders invoking the Fifth Amendment to protect them- He announced that the AFL CIO Executive Council will take up the case for Maurice Hutche son, president of the Carpenters Union and a member of the coun cil. He did not set a time for that case. Hutcheson took the Fifth Amendment when he appeared be fore the U.S. Senate Public Works Committee. The committee was looking into reports that Hutche son and others made quick profits from the sale of land to the state of Indiana along a road project.
