Many Activities Scheduled Over State For July 4th By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Oregon will welcome Independ ence Day in typical Western fash ion: with rodeos, with woodsmen's games and with fireworks. It will have pageants and races on rivers, too, and parades and at least one circus. As usual, the beaches are ex pected to be popular and the mountain resorts will have their lure. Fireworks in the hands of the general public are limited by law to such entertaining but safe af fairs as sparklers. A few burned fingers from hot wires are all that are expected from them in the way of hazards. However, supervised displays of skyrockets, aerial bombs and re lated nighttime spectacle-makers are to be found in many parts of the state. Many amusement parks will have them. Hayward Field at the University of Oregon will be the setting for the Eugene Active Club's annual fireworks show. There will be more at Harrisburg, Albany, Salem, Medford. Condon, Seaside, Manzanita, Taft and doubtless a score of other cities. The Albany Timber Carnival,' distinctive celebration featured by tree climbing, chopping, bucking, birling and similar events, will wind up a three - day affair on July 4. The Bend Water pageant on Mirror Pond there will open a three-day run on the Fourth, featured by brightly colored floats that really float. Some of the fireworks displays will be separate affairs while others will be the concluding fea ture of a day of entertainment. Condon, for example, has a day of activity starting with a break fast and continuing on with a pa rade, ball game, band concert and finally, fireworks. At Grants Pass the fireworks will climax a day brightened for the small fry by a bicycle parade. At Cave Junction, dances and a parade will be the day's features. Ashland is planning an "old fash ioned" day of celebration. Park dale will have a parade. There will be rodeos at St. Paul, Molalla, Klamath Falls, Paulina, and Vale. Hillsboro will have its annual Happy Days, starting the day be fore and ending the day after the Fourth. Water races and other aquatic sports will be featured on the Wil lamette River both at Portland on July 4 and at Salem in the July 3-7 River Days Festival. The Shrine Circus on July 4 will be in the middle of its five day appearance at Multnomah Stadium in Portland. The Dalles, now in the midst of its centennial celebration, will wind it up on the Fourth with a picnic and boat parade. Vernonia, which began distrib uting wooden nickels some weeks ago in preparation, will open its three-day Friendship Jubilee on the Fourth. In expectation of heavy high way travel particularly if the weather is good official agencies and highway groups have cau tioned motorists to use care in the hope that violent death will not be a byproduct of the holiday. Committee Plans Cub Scout Picnic By MARY WEIKUM Committees have been appointed by the Green Cub Scout Commit tee to make plans for a pack pic nic to be held Aug. 11 at Umpqua Park. Another committee meeting will be- held Aug. 2 at the home of Mrs. Meda Follctt to make final arrangements. It was announced at the last Green Cub Scout Committee meet ing that adult help in the form of den mothers and committee mem bers is still needed. Interested vol- lunteers have been asked to attend the Aug. 2 meeting. Nebraskan Visits Reinhold Suhr of Pender, Neb., has been spending some time visit ing his niece, Mrs. LeRov Gilster, and family of Castle Street in TO SPEAK AT CHURCH Mrs. May Minturn, who is con nected with the World Mission to Children in Ireland and Australia, will speak at a meeting of Cora's Christian Circle luesday at 1:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Pine Grove Church in Dixon ville. Mrs. Elsie Cain became a new member, and members discussed programs for the coming year. Circle 2 met at the home of Mrs. John Sinsley for a meeting and luncheon. New officers elect ed were: Mrs. C. E. Brittain, president: Mrs. E. A. Ilelmbolt, vice president; Mrs. John Sinsley, secretary - treasurer; Mrs. N e d Dixon, spiritual life; and Mrs. V. L. Jackson, publicity. Featured speaker at this meet ing was Mrs. Robert Minter. She i and her husband for six years were missionary workers to Ire land and Austria. They have been home for a year's furlough, but are returning in another month to the same field. Minter is a nephew of Mrs. Dixon. Mrs. Minter re ported on the missionary work. Roseburg Bank Lists $17,815,001 Deposits The Roseburg branch of the United States National Bank of Portland listed deposit! of $17,815, 001.53 in the June 6 statement of the state-wide bank. The U. S. National report showed total deposits over 710 million dol lars and total assets over 790 mil lion dollars. Loans and discounts at the Roseburg branch were reported as $7,871,523.20. Qualified informants said Harold E. Stassen was modifying two of the American key terms in an effort to reach agreement with the Russians on a limited East West disarmament treaty. Suspend nuclear arms tests for 10 or 12 months if Russia promises to negotiate arrange ments for a controlled cutoff of nuclear weapon production. Production would have to cease during 1959. 2. Heretofore the United States has made any moratorium on tests condition on an almost immediate cutoff of production. The Allies regarded Russia's plan for renouncing nuclear wea pons unenforceable and in any case undesirable because of the Soviet predominance i n man power. The new approach indicates the Western powers are ready to join in a declaration that would still leave them the right to invoke Article 51 of the U.N. charier. This article gives nations the right to act anyway they please in self-defense against big-scale aggression. The Russians last month had proposed an isolated but con trolled ban on nuclear tesls for two or three years and a "solemn" American, British and Russian pledge renouncing forever the use of nuclear arms.
