74 Tht Ntwi-Rview, Roieburg, Ort. -Thur., June 13, 1957 Teamsters Union Finances Said In Bad Straits CHICAGO Wl The president of the Chicago Federation of Labor says the Teamsters Union international is short of cash and in financial straits. William Lee, CFL chief often mentioned as a likely successor to Dave Beck, president of t h e Internat i o n a 1 Brotherhood of Teamsters, said the information came to him from John English of Washington, secretary-treasurer of the brotherhood. Lee spoke Tuesday to the Team sters Joint Council 25 of the Chi cago Federation, the councils 300 delegates represent about 10 per cent of the membership of the teamsters union. The picture which Lee said Encash gave him of the Team sters financial circumstances was this: The Teamsters have been en gaged in a long strike against Railway Express Co., in several cities. This has been costing the international about $60,000 a week in benefits for striking members. At the same time negotiations have been going on between the International and Montgomery Ward & Co., a large employer of Teamsters. If a strike against Ward's should result, 20,000 more members would start drawing benefits, draining the treasury further. To improve the union's cash po sition English is trying to sell a million dollars worth of securities immediately. The sale might re sult in a 10 per cent loss on the deal. The Chicago Sun-Times said Ihe union's financial troubles were the result of Beck's handling of union funds but Lee could not be reached for comment on the as pect. The Joint Council 25 unanimous ly demanded the resignation of Beck and endorsed John T. O'Brien, a Chicago local presi dent, to succeed him at the head of the international. O'Brien has headed Local 107 since 1923. Lee said he favored O'Brien for the top job. Ships To Attempt Arctic Passage With Icebreakers SAN DIEGO, Calif. W - U.S. Navy cargo ships will attempt to make an Arctic passage from the Pacific to Atlantic this summer behind icebreakers, a supply force commander said Tuesday. The only vessel ever to make the passage from west to east is the Royal Canadian Mounted Po lice vessel, St. Koch, now a nauti cal shrine at Vancouver, B.C. Rear Adm. Frederick S. Sleltcr, who will command the Pacific di vision of the annual resupply ex pedition to radar posts in the Arctic, said the attempted break through would be led by the Ca nadian icebreaker Laborador and U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Stor is, Spar and Bramble. Some of the cargo ships will attempt to follow the icebreakers through a navigable channel of Bellot Strait discovered during the 1956 resupply mission, Stelter said.
