Chester Bast, on Dyke Lane recently fol lowing a two-month trip to Cal ifornia visiting relatives. Mrs. l.eo Manske is recupera ting at her home on Highway 99, following major surgery at the St. Vincent hospital in Portland. Mrs. Manske will return to the Port land hospital in a few weeks for further surgery. Out-of-town guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wilson were their old friends, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wells. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Bratseh were called to St. Helens re cently due to the critical illness of the litter s father, Stephen Al paugh, who is in the St Helens Hospital for medical treatment. Their sons, Stevie and Jeffery. are staying with their paternal grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bratseh In Dillard. "I wish they would leave my husband in peace to do his work." said Miss Bergman, who is act ing on the Pans stage. "This is all a rumor that has sprung up and it is truly unfortunate." Rossellini is now making a pic ture in India. Miss Bergman has repeatedly denied rumors of a rift between them. A copyrighted news dispatch from Bombay said Rossellini's paramour is the beautiful, 27-year-old mother of two small chil dren. The dispatch said the woman is reported to be pregnant, as Miss Bergman was almost eight years aso when her affairs with Ros sellini made worldwide headlines. The news said reliable sources in Bombay reported the Indian government had asked Rossellini to leave India Because of tne af fair, but that an Italian embassy spokesman said India so far had only asked the director unofficial ly to "try to smooth down the trouble to avoid any scandal." Owned and trained by 15-year-old Caroline Voitich. Stockton, Beans spanned 12 feet, 7 inches in hn three allotted hops Sunday and won the 31st annual jumping frog jubilee. The contest commemorates Mark Twains famous yard, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Cal averas County." Beans got the glory. Miss Voi tich gets $1,000. But his performance was far short of the world record of 16 feet 10 inches set in 1934 by a frog named Lucky, owned by Ray Weiner of Angels Camp. While domestic hoppers turned in mediocre performances, the foreign frogs appeared demoral ized. Most of them just sat. Threats To Witnesses Defer Blinding Trial NEW YORK If Trial of John (Johnny Diol Dioguardi as the alleged mastermind of the Victor Riesel acid-blinding case was postponed Monday. The federal prosecutor said several key wit nesses have been threatened and are refusing to testify. Federal District Judge William B. norlands adjourned start of the trial until Thursday. Riesel, a newspaper labor eolumnisl. was blinded in a street assault April 5, 1936. Japan Okays Joint Defense With America TOKYO Japan's govern ment has approved a four-point basic defense policy tied securely to the United States "until an ef fective organ of the United Na tions can be set up" to combat possible future aggression. "In case of aggression, Japan will fight it in order to preserve our country's independence and peace, which is based on demo cratic principle," said the govern ment announcement of the policy approved by Prime Minister ' Kishi's Cabinet. CEORSE EDES Promotion exercises for the Yon calla eighth grade students will be held in the grade school gym May 29 at a p.m. The students will present the program, and Keith van Krevelin, chairman of the board, will give diplomas to 33 graduating eighth graders. Achievement Day Set The Yoncalla Grade School will host all 4-H groups from North Douglas county at Achievement Day, May 24 at 2 p.m. and in the evening. Displays will be held in the grade school gym. The second annual field day for the Yoncalla Elementary School was held recently. Competitive races, including bicycle races, sack races and pie eating con teats, were held. The two grand prize winners were Sherrie Rob erts and Ronald Revelle, who won blue and red ribbons. The band played during the exercises. The school has just completed several major improvements. The fire proofing overhead in the base ment of the school was completed and the new breezeway and bus loading facility have been com pleted, also. The final construc tion on the cement vault to hold all school records was just fin ished. 150 Attend Approximately 350 persons at tended the Yoncalla Grade School annual "open house" musicale held recently. Two hundred stu dents took part in the program consisting of band numbers, primary rhythm band, girls glee club members, violin solo by Donna Churchill and girls trio, Donna Churchill, Kay Churchill and Carolyn Simms. All the rooms .were open, and a special exhibi- 1 tion in handicraft and metal craft was displayed. A complete I text book display and audio-visual 'display demonstration was held. Other new officers are: Mrs. Vera Liesinger, vice president; Mrs. Bud Holm, secretary; Mrs. Wesley Thompson Sr.. treasurer; Mrs. Lloyd Movers, two - year director, and Mrs. Dwight Beck, one - year, director. Installation is scheduled at the next meeting Thursday, June 20, at the home of Mrs. Cal Gilman. Mrs. William Eadus, a guest at the meeting, gave a talk on fu schias. and Mrs. Lloyd Movers 1 reported on iris'.
