Bill Hunter, Bill Gum, Tom Wick, Ron White and Dennis
Griffen assisted in the proiect. Further donations of

Mrs. Paul Jenkins, 631 W. Stanton St. The committee is
made up of five ladies, and they cooperate with the aux
iliaries of both hospitals.

they visited the State Legislature.

trip up tne coast highway to sea
side. Black, English instructor at

attend a speech association meet
ing Saturday.

high school teachers, attended the
three-day state tournament at Sa
lem. They concluded their spring
vacation, visiting Mrs. smith s par
ents. Mr. and Mrs. Homer Parish
at Oswego.

at the home of Rod Hustead of
Estacada. Hustead was formerly

Portland, visiting overnight with
Mr. and Mrs. C. P. McAuliffe at

tidal wavea of any source.
The warning system wss estab
lished in 1!MS after the great tidal
wave of 194S that killed 173 per
sons and caused 25 million dol
lars damage at Hilo, Hawaii. In
1952 and again earlier this month
the survey warned the Hawauan
Islands of heavy waves and no
Uvea were lost.
Tidal wavrs result from subms-
rine earthquakes, although not all
such quakes create waves. At its
observatory in Honolulu the sur
vey first calculates the location
of. a shock. It then determines
from tide observation stationa in
the area whether a wave actually
nas stsneo.
Although the time it will srrive
at distant points can be predicted,
there is no wsy of determining
iU height or the damage it might
cause.
The survey ssid the nw service

months, since it requires prepara
tion ot special -wave travel time
charts.

loaned a helping hand in the beautification of the Douglas
Community Hospital grounds. The Roseburg Woman's
Club anticipated completion of landscaping around both
hospitals as a long-range project. Doug Frisbie, Steve
Cumbert, Al Tomlison and Allyn Ford aided In
this project. Further donations may be made to Mrs.
Albert Micelll, 725 W. Melrose Rd. A silver offering will
be asked ot the clubs camellia festival April 2-3, and
proceeds will be divided between the hospitals to further
