Melrose Unit Studies Plants, Ornamentals "Propagation of Ornamental and House Plants" was the topic for a recent all-day meeting of the Mel rose Home Extension Unit at the Grange Hall. Project leaden were Mrs. Jamea Doyle and Mrs. Amy Seelcy, who talked on the propogation of plants and gave an actual demonstration of mixing types of soil and potting and repotting plants. The talk at the next meeting of the group will be "Herbs and Other Seasonings" which will be given by Helen Chandler, Douglas County home extension agent. Demos Want Covernor To Appoint Official COOS BAY I The State Dem ocratic Central Committee thinks the governor should be allowed to appoint the state's chief election official. At a meeting here this week the committee, with this exception, called for the same changes in the state's election lawa as have been suggested in a report by the Legislative Interim Committee on Elections. Dr. Mohn said in a prepared address to some 8U0 Methodist officials attending the quadrennial conference of the de nomination's bishops and district superintendents. I Canyonville City Recorder Says Many Houses Vacant Disabled War Veterans Tax Exemption Deadline SALEM m Disabled war vet erans and war widows must apply by April 1 to get property tax exemptions, the slate Veterans Department advised Monday. The exemption amounta to $7, 500 of the true cash value ot the property. The exemption is given to all veterans of the Indian, Mexican or Spanish-American wars; veter and of other wars who have 40 per cent disability; and unremar ried widows of veterans of any war. Exemptions are obtained by ap plication to county assessors. By VIRGINIA PROCTOR A shortage of tenants for Can yonville houses hss been noted by City Recorder Mrs. Ralph Good ell. She aaid there are more vacant housea in town than in any pre vious year since she's been in of fice. She said only three persons have been added to the water users' lists since Jan. 1. The new residents in town are Rhieny Paschel, who moved into1 McClane cabins and Mrs. Goldie Schaefer, who moved into a T. L. Weaver rental Leaves For Mexice Charles Dowd, a chemist for the Hanna Nickel Smelting Co. at Rid dle, left Sunday from Medford by plane for Santa Rosalia, Mexico, and the Hanna company's installa tions there. -He will assist in the laboratory in the company's Mexi can facility, according to Mrs. Dowd. She said his assignment would be of from three to six months duration. She and sons, Chris and Bryce, will remain at Canyonville. Frances and Maxine Oaks were Initiated into the South Umpqua Business and Professional Women's Club at Canyonville at the special ceremony in the Youth Center. The Roseburg BPW chapter officiated. Vivian Logsdon, past president of the Roseburg orgsnization took charge of the emblem ceremony and initiation. A social hour pre ceded the ceremonies. Mrs. Carl Moodie was hostess. Attending Convtnion Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Dotson of Canyonville and Robert L. Fisher of Glendale are in Seattle this week attending the Western Coun cil Convenion of the American Fed eration of Labor. They are dele gates of the union from Local 2716. Lumber and Sawmill Workers, of the Canyonville-Glendale area. E. A. Antis, who suffered a stroke several weeks ago is reported im proving slowly although still bed fast. Mr. and Mra. Harold Aver- ill of Albany, the Anlis' youngest daughter and husband, spent a few daya here last week assisting in the care of her father. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Graham were the weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Klumph of Medford, former Canyonville residents. Make Stopover Mr. and Mra. H. J. Swift of La mont. Wash., both well-known us the area made their annual atop over in Canyonville en route home from attending the trap shoot matchea in Nevada and other South western states. The Swifts spent the week-end here visiting both the John Ham lins and the Charlea Hamlin fam ilies and displayed the trophies Swift won at the matchea. RETURNS FROM FAR BAST Marvin C. Flory, boilerman third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mra. Chester H. Flory of Milo, returned to San Diego, Clif., Saturday after a six-month cruise in the Western Pacific and Far East. Flory is the husband of Mrs. Mer its E. Flory of San Diego. The Navy man returned to Dan Di ego aboard the radar picket des troyer USS Chevalier.
