Permanent Alternative For Suez Canal Planned, Even If West Wins Fight By JOHN SCALI WASHINGTON ( Top U. S. officials are reported determined to find a permanent alternative to the Suet Canal, win, lose or draw in the current bitter struggle over its control. In their view, Western countries have relied far too heavily on the Suez shortcut even though it was recognized as a fragile line of communications ever since Britain left Egypt in 1953. New oil pipelines must now be seriously considered, they say, along with bigger and faster tank ers to haul critically needed oil from the Middle East without us ing the canal. . These alternatives may involve the. spending of big sums of money by oil companies and private ship pers which have a heavy financial stake in this Middle East , com merce. The Eisenhower administration appears willing, they say, to en courage such spending on national security grounds. It would be dan gerous, in their view, ever again to be caught in the position where interruption of Suez traffic could threaten almost immediate eco nomic disaster for European al lies. The. need for devising a lasting alternative to the canal, it was em phasized, will be present even if the dispute with Egypt over control of the, waterway is settled to the West's satisfaction. The West can not take the risk that Egypt might someday renege on any pledges to "keep the route open, they said. In line with administration views, some shippers already are building tankers as big as 100,000 tons. The trend toward such big vessels will continue, it is felt, even though such supertankers can not pass throught the narrow canal. There were only 130 requests at the same time two years ago. Rose Testifies Rock V Roll Forced On Public NEW YORK Wl Songwriter showman Billy Rose declared Tuesday that Broadcast Music, Inc.,. an organization founded by radio broadcasters, is "respon sible for rock V roll and other musical monstrosities which are muddying up the airways. Other songwriters have com plained that the TV-radio net works, through BMI, control tunes heard on records as well as on the air. BMI officials have denied it. Testimony on the subject is be ing taken by the antitrust sub committee of the House Judiciary Committee. Rose asserted in a "prepared statement to the- subcommittee that its investigation is "the first important breath of fresh air in this whole foul mess." He said BMI was publishing 74 per cent of the top songs and add ed that "not only are most of the BMI songs junk, but in many cases they arc obscene junk, pretty much on a level with dirty comic magazines." Rose added: "It's the current climate on ra dio and TV which makes Elvis Presley and his animal posturing ! possible." !
