This means the rates will go into effect on Friday, Sept. 14, along with higher servira raiM Iwiuraan the United States, Canada and iviexico. These new press rates come on the heels of an increase averag ing 9.6 per cent on general com mercial service messages within the United States, which became effective Aug. 26. The overall increases are esti mated to increase the Western Union Telegraph Co. revenues by about $10,283,000, after allowances for some shrinkage in patronage as a result of the higher charges. Performer Gordon Howard will present a variety of song selec tions during his show in Central Junior High School. He will be ac companied by Miss Virginia Young of Koseburg. The concert for Howard is spon sored by Roseburg Zonta Club members. Proceeds go toward fur ther study in New York City, where the Tenmile man and his wife will zn in the near future. Wednesday, Howard termed the concert as more of' a "popular program . . . we've tried to select numbers for it which will please listeners." Featured are selections from musical comedy, negro spi rituals and the works of Mendel ssohn, Schubert and Brahms, Howard and his wife are now living in Tenmile with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Howard. The young couple recently returned from Eugene where the vocalist actor carved more niches in his eventful career. He won lead roles in the musical comedies "Kiss Me Kate" and "Carousel" and rounded his acting experience in straight dramatic parts. Simultaneously, he complet ed all work for a Master's degree in drama at the University of Ore gon with the exception of his thesis. lnis past spring, as a production thesis, Howard produced a new manuscript treatment of the Faus tus legent, "The Magical History of Dr. Faustus." The tragic com edy was produced in the universi ty s arena theater and played to full houses. Howard directed the WOMEN WANTED!
