4-H, FFA Clubs To Hold Important Part In Fair Douglas County i ll and Future Farmers of America Clubs will have active days this year at the Douglas Conty Fair. A four-day program has been set down for the youngsters, and they'll have to get up early in the morning in some of the judging and showmanship contests. First judging is to begin before the fair officially opens. That will be at 4 p.m. next Wednesday. That's entry day at the fair. On Thursday, judging and show manship contests are due to start for members of livestock clubs. Home economic club members will start their contests the same morning. ' They will continue through Saturday. Ail contests are pointed toward qualifying entrants at the State Fair in Salem, Sept. 1-8. Highlights of 4-H activity will be the 3tyle revue, set for Saturday afternoon, Aug. 25. That morning, 4-Hers will engage in a tractor driving contest. The Rotary Club will sponsor the fat stock auction for 4-H and FFA livestock clubs again this year. It will be held Saturday afternoon. e x .Dormitories again will be set up on' the fairgrounds for exhibitors. The county fair dates are Aug. 23-26. The Rotary Club again will have a hand in the annual 4-H and FFA fat stock auction at the Douglas County Fair, which will be held Friday at 3 p.m. The following rules apply: 1. Animals sold must be exhib ited at the Douglas County Fair and according to the rules outlin ed in the premium book. 2. One club member may not of- icr xor auction more than two mar ket exhibits of beef, sheep or hogs. 3. Marketing animals sold must comply with the following limits: (a) Market lambs should weigh at' least 80 pounds at time of sale; (b) inarket hogs should weigh be tween 170 and 230 pounds; (c) market beef must weigh at least 750 pounds and no more than 1, 150 pounds. 4. Only animals that grade "good" or better will be sold in the auction. It is necessary to have this rule in order to present the buyers with a reasonable product and to prevent anyone from re ceiving a premium for a poor job of selecting and raising an animal for sale. However, if there are members owning animals that grade below "good and they wish to sell, assistance will be given in disposing of these animals for at least the prevailing market price for their grade. 5. When the market classes are judged, these animals will be plac ed according to market grade. This means that if all animals in the class are judged to be of the highest grade, they would all re ceive a blue ribbon A champion animal will be selected from the SMOG NOT TOO BAD LOS ANGELES t The Ail Year Club say smog isn't harm ing the southern California tourist trade as much as had been feared. Don Thomas, managing director, said that 16 out of every 1,000 visitors polled by mail indicated local smog conditions would keep them from revisiting this area.. He added that some visitors didn't mind the smog because their home towns had worse smog conditions. highest grade In each class. 6. 4-H members who have satis factorily completed their projects and have met requirements of the show and sale will be eligible to sell market animals. This includes a 12-hour shrinkage prior to weighing. 1. At the sale, hogs and lambs will be sold first and beef last. In each type, the champion animal will be sold first. Top Needlework Eligible For Nation-wide Contest Crochet winners in 16 classifi ' cations at the 195G Douglas County Fair will be eligible for a nation wide crochet contest which offers over $3,000 in. cash prizes. Also, blue-ribbon winners in cro cheting with original designs can compete on a national scale for $600 in the original crochet design contest sponsored by McCall's Needlework Magazine. Rules require the contestants in both contesU to use mercerized crochet cotton in a thread size of 100 or less, and entries must be completed since Jan. 1, 1956. Blue ribbons will be given at the fair in the following crochet divi sion: 1. tablecloths; 2. bed spreads; 3. luncheon cloths; 4. centerpiec es; 5. buffet and vanity sets; 6. chair sets; 7. doilies (under 14 inches); 8. scarves and wall pan vis; 9. pot holders and hot plate mats; 10. place mats; 11 other household accessories; 12. edgings and insertions; 13. fashion acces sories; 14. ladies over 65; 15. men only; and 16. teen-age girls. In addition a gold loving cup will go to the entry chosen "best of fair." The nationwide crochet contest will pick a grand national cham pion and champions from among the teen-age entries and male en tries. The winners will emerge from a host of blue ribbon winners at fairs all over the country.. All three national champions will win trophies, cash prizes and free trips to New York City. Prize mon ey will also go to second, third and fourth place crocheters and to honorable mention entrants in each of the 16 classifications. The original design contest is separate from the Nationwide Cro chet Contest. An original design is one that has been created by the crochetcr and has not been pre viously published. Those entering their own designs are asked to tag their work "ori ginal design" when they submit it to the needlework division at the fair. These entries will also be el igible for prizes in the nationwide crochet contest. VFW COMMANDER DALLAS Wi Cooper Thurman Holt of Chattanooga, Tenn., was to formally become commander-in-chief of the Veterans of For- t eign Wars Friday. Holt, at 32 the youngest man ever to take the office, was to be elevated at ceremonies in Fri day's closing sessions of the 57th national VFW encampment.
