Tue., Aug. 21, 1956 The News-Review, Roeburg, Ore. 9 Only 400,000 Farmers Apply For Tax Refund WASHINGTON UP Only 400,000 of an estimated three million eli gible farmers have applied for refunds on taxes paid on gasoline used on farms, the Internal Revenue Service said Thursday. This is the halfway point for filing refund claims for the tax paid during the first six months of 1956. The deadline for filing is Sept. 30. A revenue spokesman said no figures were available on the amount of refunds paid the 400, 000 who have filed. One source estimated the average might run around $10 each, making, total refunds to date about four million dollars. Although there may be a big rush to meet the Sept. 30 dead- line, the rough estimate of refunds ito date contrasts sharply with the j 30 million dollars the government had expected would be claimed, i When Congress approved a bill last spring authorizing refund of the two cents a gallon federal tax on farm gas and diesel fuel, it was estimated the refund would total 60 millioi dollars annually. Effective Ju'y l, the federal tax on gasoline and diescl fuels went up from two cents to three cents a gallon. Therefore, In the fiscal year ending next June 30, farmers will be able to claim three cents a gallon for fuel used on farms and for fanning purposes.
