D'Ewart to be assistant secretary of interior turned into a hot argu ment Wednesday over "smear" campaign methods and the treat ment of President Eisenhower with dicumarol, a blood anti-coagulant. The issue of the President's Pon't be treatment came up when Sen. Neuberger (D-Ore) disclosed that he had written former Surgeon General Ionard A. Scheele con cerning the safety of the use of dicumarol. He said he had received an ans wer from the. former Public Health Service chief which indi cated the medicine is "highly con troversial.' Neuberger placed the letter, which in quoting medical author- authorities ran for 10 pages, into! the record of the benate interior Committee. Dr. Scheele said in one part of the letter that its (qicumaroi) use and duration of treatment are matters to be determined by the nhvsician in relation to the individual patient." The appeal was made be fore the press and television in the backyard from which the child was abducted. 0SC Student Loan Fund Totals $100,000 More than $1000O0 was loaned to Oregon State College students by the student loan fund this past year to assist them in continuing their education. OSC has a $144,000 fund from which student loans are made. This fund was built up by con tributions of persons interested in helping students, according to Wil liam Langaa, faculty chairman. Some 800 students borrowed money from the fund last year. The fund is an aid to students who have already earned income through their own efforts. Amounts borrowed varied from $10 to $600. Loan periods were from 10 days to two years Re navment failures are negligible. Langan said. Biggest gift the loan fumd re ceived in 1956 was a $20,000 grant from Mrs. Nellie Shaver of Port land.
