2 Tha Newt-Review, Roseburg, Hattie Johnson Dies In Redmond Hattie May Johnson, 76, died July 2 in Redmond, Ore. She had moved from Roseburg to Redmond in January of this year. She was born May 7, 1870, in Lincoln, Neb. Surviving are: two sons, David A. Johnson, Redmond and Howard K. Johnson, Canyonville; 12 grand children, and a number of great grandchildren. Funeral services were held this afternoon in The Chapel of the Roses at 2 p.m. The Rev. George Knox of the Wcstside Christian Church officiated. Jntcrment was in the Civil Bend Cemetery. Carder. Algeria, Wl Agen- eral strike ordered by nationalist rebels slowed normally bustling Algiers to a crawl Thursday. French authorities ordered a heavy crack-down on strikers. Virtually all Moslems stayed away from work in this city of about 600,000, whose population is divided almost equally Moslem and European. The nationalists had called the strike lor mis 126th anniversary of the French occupation of Algiers, threatening to shoot anyone seen on the streets. The French alerted troops, called out extra military patrols and put helicopters on standby to keep watch over this administra tive capital. Pendleton Cirl Killed In Highway Accident PENDLETON lifl Barbara Morrow, about 18, was killed about 12:30 a. m. Thursday in an accident on Highway 395 midway between here and John uay. State Dolice said they were in formed that the car in which she was riding missed a curve. Bar baras sister, whose name was nor. immediately available, and E. R. Spath of Long Creek, other occu nants of the car. both were in jured and taken to a jonn uay hospital tor treatment.. The accident occurred 30 min utes after close of the period in which Fourth of July holiday fa talities are tallied. (NEA) sub mitted recommendations Thurs day which ignored demands of some members that the NEA take stands on two racial questions. This virtually assured a floor fight at Friday's closing session of the NEA annual convention here. The committee submitted draft resolutions at an open hearing Tuesday which long-time NEA members said turned into one of the most prolonged and argu mentative in their memory. The committee draft expressed "the conviction of the association that all problems of integration in our schools are capable of solu tion at the state and local levels by citizens . . . working together." Myron Lieberman, Norman, Okla., proposed a substitute which would condemn teacher employ ment practices based on race. Members who spoke in support of nis proposal said that integration of teachers was lagging behind integration of students. Lieberman told a reporter later he would bring his motion to the convention floor Friday, when resolutions are to be adopted, if the committee did not include it in its final report. The full con vention could override the com mittee, although it has seldom done so in the past. "Things have changed in the past year," Lieberman said, re ferring to a statement by a com mittee member at the hearing that the draft resolution was the same as was adopted by the NEA last year. Ml An army helicopter crew Thurs day recovered what appeared to oe turtner evidence that two big airliners collided before crashing into the Grand Canyon, killing all 128 aboard. The copter flew out of the can yon with a piece of a cowling from the wreckage of a United Air L,ines DU7. Brought out with the cowlins was another piece of metal bear ing a red stripe which Trans world Airlines officials said was similar to a stripe on their Super constellations. Main wreckage of the DC7 and a Superconstellation which went down presumably at the same time June 30 was located Sunday less than a mile apart. I 3 Major's Wife Tells Of Double Slaying Following Forgery COLUMBUS, Ohio Ml A petite, 32-year-old wife of an Air Force major told shefiff's deputies to day she stabbed her elderly land ord and his wife to death when her check forgery scheme back fired. Deputies said Mrs. Blanche Jacobs, mother of three, spent three days trying to conceal the deaths of her "close" friends, then told her husband, who took her to police. Mrs. Jacobs walked into police headquarters last night and announced, "I want to report a double murder," police said. She was accompanied by her husband Maj. Eugene W. Jacobs, 35, who said he had doubted the bizarre story she blurted out to him some time earlier. Authorities checked and found the bodies of Andrew J. Robinson, 74, and his wife Maude, 73, side by side in the bathroom of their suburban Groveport home. Their bodies showed multiple stab wounds. Lt. Ellsworth P. Beck of the Franklin County sheriff's office said Mrs. Jacobs gave him a statement admitting she killed the couple last Monday when they learned she had forged a check against Mrs. Robinson's bank ac count. That check and two others forged by Mrs. Jacobs totaled $1,149, Beck said. Mrs. Jacobs lived next door to the Robinsons. Jacobs, who is sta tioned at the nearby Lockbourne AFB, described the Robinsons as "very close" friends. Mrs. Jacobs sobbed intermit tently as she told how she cleaned up the blood-spattered Robinson home the day after the killings and dragged- the bodies into the bathroom. Beck said. The lieutenant said Mrs. Jacobs tried to give neighbors the im pression that the Robinsons had left town. When she realized she couldn't continue to conceal what had happened, she told her hus band, Beck added. Glide To Budget Funds To Light Football Field The Glide board has tentatively agreed to include $10,000 in next year's budget for lighting instal lations on the high school ball field. The decision was reached after the board turned down a plan by the Glide Kiwanis Club campaign for funds Tuesday night. The dis approval came after it was learn ed that the campaign would call for the student body of Glide High School to take an active part in the fund-raising operation. In the expectation that the amount will be approved by voters next year, the club said it would go ahead with securing and peel ing poles for the lights. They will be 90 feet long, and the Glide Lumber Co., has agreed to trans port the poles to the school grounds without charge. The Kiwanis project had called for installation of a lighting sys tem for the football field and base ball diamond.
