They will compete In the RCA approved Douglas County Rodeo i (see other story) and are part of a j brilliant array of rodeo time 1 events. Friday night pretty Queen Caro-1 Ivn Jackson and her two princess-' es Judy Strode and Carolyn Whitson will be honored at the kickoff event. They'll be guests of honor at the Queen's Ball at the Community Building. Saturday night, they'll guest another event in the same locale the Wrang ler's Ball. Along with dances, the rodeo days include the parade in down town Roseburg at 10 a.m., fun for all ages at Frontier Town in the Community Building Friday and Saturday evenings, and a big cow boy breakfast Sunday from 7 to 11 a.m. Frontier Town will open at 8 E m. Friday and Saturday, an hour efore dance time. Like all rodeo events, it is public. The 12th annual event Is spon sored by the Douglas County Ro deo Assn. It will be held at the county fairgrounds, located east of relocated Highway 89, south west of Roseburg. Tickets (general admission, box seats and reserve) may be pur chased at the grounds or before starting time at Rodeo Informa tion Headquarters ticket booth, 507 SE Jackson St., Roseburg. The rodeo is made possible through the efforts of many men and women. Technically, it is spon sored by the Douglas County Ro deo Assn. That association is. com posed of the Roseburg Junior Chamber of Commerce, Roseburg Lions Club and the Douglas County Mounted Sheriff's Posse. They are ably assisted by their auxiliary counterparts. RODEO AND HORSE SHOW SALEM Wl The 1956 Oregon Male Fair will feature a combina tion rodeo and horse show for the first time in eight years, fair manager Leo Spitzbart announced Max M. Manchester, Portland, will manage the horse show. WILD HORSE RACE Among new attractions at the rodeo this comini rung weekend is a HER MAJESTY Queen Carolyn Jackson of Winchester will rule over festivities of the 1956 Douglas County Rodeo. Her mount is Beetlebomb, a part Tennessee walking horse and colt of Doughboy. The chestnut gelding will carry Queen Carolyn through many rodeo festivities. He prob ably won't be present Sunday morning to help Queen Carolyn serve the cowboy breakfast, which she hopes to do. (Dick Gilman). Rodeo Parade Saturday To Be Broadcast; Grants Pass Cavemen To March wild horse race. This Is the first time the event has been seen in Roseburg, according to rodeo asso ciation members. A S150 daily purse will be awarded winners, from the Emerald Empire Roun The 1956 Douglas County Rodeo, parade Saturday, geared to the theme of "Frontier Times," prom ises to be unique in rodeo history. It will be broadcast over radio station KRXL to those unable to come to downtown Roseburg and view the colorful spectacle. Rodeo lover Del McKay will describe the entries, during the 40-minute radio cast. Crowds lining the streets for the event which kicks off at 10 a.m. from the Triangle on Jackson Streot won t miss a feature. Chair man Wayne Oftcndahl of the Jun ior Chamber of Commerce says four loudspeakers will be placed along the parade route. They'll be manned by parade experts who'll tell spectators what is passing by. A raft of rodeo dignitaries will parade in the downtown streets. Following closely behind parade grand marshalls Mayor Ernest M. Barker Jr. and rodeo association President Robert Tripodi will be the Douglas court and royalty from other cities. Queen Sharon Curl of the Pen dleton Roundup will ride her horse in tne parade as win court royalty up in Eugene' and from other ro deos in the county. Many bands are expected to join in the fun. .It will be the first rodeo parade for Roseburg High School band members to make more colorful with their snappy grey and orange uniforms. A host of commercial and non commercial floats have been en tered, Oftendahl said. He expects a total of 250 entries. Entry deadline in the parade has been extended to Thursday. Fee for a commercial unit is $10. Non commercial units are admitted free. PARADE ROUTE The parade forms at the Jack son Street Triangle at 9:15 a.m. and starts up Jackson Street to Lane Street. It travels west on Lane Street to Rose Street. It goes north on Rose Street to Central Junior High School, where it will disband. Oftendahl pointed out that It is a revised route and if not the same as last year's. Champions To Pit Skills For $7,500 World Champions, top contend ers, a nosi oi winners from last year's Roseburg rodeo converge for the Douglas County Rodeo Sat- luraay ana Sunday. Vera Castro, the reigning team roping champion from Livermore, Calif.; Bill Linderman, five time Wash., and Ross Doilarhide, top steer wrestler in 1953 from Lake- view. Entry fees should raise the prize money to S7.50O. Also slated to compete accord ing to local intormation, are worm champs of the cowboy kingdom Eddy Akridge of Beaver, Okla., and Dean Oliver of Boise, Idaho. Akridge tames impossible steeds bareback and Oliver is considered a top calf roper. Castro took his first chamoion- ship last season with 6.227 points. and is currently in seventh place in the national team roping stand ings. He can expect stiff competi tion from Bob G. Jones, Madera, Calif., runner-up in the team roping championship standings last sea son, and E. V. Dorsey. Sonoma. Calif., who wound up in ninth place for 1955. Triple Threat Man By copping the all around cow boy, saddle bronc and steer wrest ling titles in 1953, Bill Linderman became the first man in the sports history to win a triple crown. All around cowboy in 1953 and top sad dle bronc rider in 1945, Linder man, ranking 10th among saddle bronc riders, will compete in bare back, saddle bronc and steer wrestling at Roseburg. Ross Doilarhide. the Number 1 bulldogger in 1953, who won the team roping here last season, was injured at Amarillo. Tex., in Jan uary but has shared the purse at nine rodeos since his return to luiiipeuiiuii. . . Jackie Wright, Dayvllle, is slat ed to compete in bareback and sad dle bronc riding. Wright launched a winning streak in February that has carried him to second place v''rM$: :wf'iM mf-X- TOP WORLD COWBOY IN ACTION Ross Doilarhide, Lakeview, makes ready here to win more points in steer wrestling. He was best in the nation in the event in 1953. Doilarhide will be present Saturday and Sunday at the 12th annual Douglas County Rodeo to build his points toward the 1956 title. Also betting their skills against their . entry fees on the saddled outlaws will be Tuffy Federer, Cheyenne, Who., who took top money in that event here last sea son, as well as setting the pace in bull riding, George Menkenmaier, Burns, who placed second in sad dle bronc riding here last season and is currently third among the nation's bronc riders, and Don Toclle, also from Burns, now in ninth place in the standings. Toelle placed fourth on the brahma bulls here last season. The steer wrestling contests win be sparked by Sherman Sullins, San Diego, Calif., who took top honors twisting steers at Roseburg last season; Gene Miles, Portland, who placed fourth In the event here last year, and Tater Decker, tenth ranking bulldogger from Clayton, Okla., who will also compete in the roping events and in bareback riding. He has placed at ten rodeos so far this season. Other winners from last year who will be back for return bouts include Glenn Hone. Ogden. Utah. who won the bareback and placed third in the saddle bronc event; Bill Kunkle, Portland, who had a big dav. placing fourth on the sad dle broncs, second on the bare- backs and third in steer wrestling, and Rich Vrcdenbcrg, who placed fourth in calf roning. Under the point award system of the Rodeo Cowboys' Assn., inc., a cowboy gets one point for every dollar won at an RCA-approved rodeo during the season. TEAM ROPINO A recognized rodeo event for which a world's champion is named but not one of the five standard rodeo events. It ii work ed by two mounted ropers, one roping the head of the steer and one the hing legs, and is done in two ways: team tying and dally team roping. The champion team roper of the year is determined by combining the points received in team roping and team tying. The arena director is the person whose responsibility it is to see that the rodeo goes off smoothly and according to the rules. He supervises all jobs and details in and connected to the rodeo arena itself, such as loading the chutes, keeping the arena clear, etc. He may be hired either by the rodeo committee, the producer, or the stock contractor. Bulldogglng (steer wrestling) is le of the five standard events in one rodeo. Other Rodeos Set This Year In Dougas County Three other rodeos are sched uled in Douglas County this year. Ail are of the amateur variety. The next rodeo coming up in the county is the annual Yoncalla Sad dle Club Rodeo July 3 and 4. The event was marred last year by an accident in which Donnie Pyeatt was injured when a horse rolled on mm. Later in the month, the second annual Happy Valley Rodeo is on tap. It will take place July 28 and 29. The final scheduled rodeo of the year in the county is the Myrtle Creek Rodeo over Labor Day, Sept. 2 and 3. It is fastened on the bull in such a manner that it falls off at the end of the ride. There can be no knots or hitches in the rope and the rope must have a bell attached that hangs under the bull's belly. The contestant may cling only to this bull rope and must not touch any part of the bull or himself with his free hand.
