Chemical Trick Increases
Stockpiles Of 3 Strategic
Metals And Yields Uranium

SEATTLE (-A chemical trick
which can increase this country's
stockpiles of three strategic met
als and yield uranium as a by
product was reported today by two
U.S. Bureau o Mines researchers
from Oregon.
The procedure consists mainly of
adding a little salt to a 130-year-old
formula which utilizes chlor
ine to separate groups of metals
from their crude ores.
Addition of the salt, the research
ers said, results in a simple, low
cost production of tantalum, titan
ium and columbium from black
sands taken from Bear Valley, Ida
ho. These three metals are much
used in electronics, aircraft build
ing and atomic sciences.
Left over from the processes are
compounds of uranium, thorium,
iron and a series of chemicals
called the rare earths. The uran
ium, of course, is useful in nu
clear science. Thorium is a pos
sible substitute for uranium in
atomic energy.
Many varieties of black sand are
available around the world as
sources of these much-wanted sub
stances.
The process was reported by
A. W. Henderson and S. L. May
of the Bureau of Mines laboratory
at Albany, Ore. They presented it
to a meeting of the American so
ciety of Chemical Engineers, held
m connection with the annual con
vention of the Pacific Division of
the American Assn. for the Ad
vancement of Science.
Basically, the process consists of
mixing black sands or concentrates
with chlorine gas and subjecting
the mixture to heat. At a high
temperature tantalum and colum
bium emerge from this mixture in
the form of gas. At a lower tern
perature titanium is separated
from it. This leaves the uranium
thorium and iron in nongaseous
form as by-products.

Trips to far away places at the
expense of nation-wide companies
for Roseburg sales people are be
coming matter-of-fact.
The latest to win one such trip
was Mrs. Earl (Edna) West, Man
ager of the Diana Craig store.
She was one of four managers in
the nation-wide chain to win a trip
to New York and Havana, Cuba,
in July with all expenses paid.
Rep. Harris" Ellsworth sent her
a telegram of congratulations
shortly after the announcement
she had won.
She will weekend in New York
City and then sail for Havana July
21. The trip was awarded on the
basis of volume of sales in a ladies
slip contest. The contest is spon
sored annually by the Diana
Stores chain.

last month.
Although both were eligible to
take the trip to Nassau in the
Bahamas, McAllister found the
pressure of business too great, so
he gave his trip to a friend, Edna
Blizard. She and Mrs. McAllister
then went on the expense-paid
jaunt. This contest was also based
on volume of sales.
Order Of DeMolay Sets

Roseburg Chapter of the Order
of DeMolay will hold installation
of officers Saturday, June 16, at 8
p.m. at the Masonic Temple in
Roseburg. Grants Pass chapter
will install Karl Thiele, master
councilor; Ernie Knigge, senior
councilor; and Larry Sloan Jr.,
junior councilor.
