( Buck Jr., a croaker (ram a bayshore slough at Oakland, Calif., leaped 15 feet 9 inches to win the Inter national Frog Olympics Sunday. Buck Jr. outjumped foreign and domestic competition without ben efit of the surreptitious Ducusnoi which stoDned Mark Twain's "cel ebrated Jumping Frog of Calav eras County in The winning frog was owned and trained by Bill Basacker, an eighlh ffrarin student from Oakland. The world record, established in 1954 by a local frog named Lucky, is 16 feet 10 inches in the standard three-hop jump. BOARD TO MEET The executive board of the Rose- burg Council of Church Women will meet Tuesday at :30 a.m. in the Presbyterian Church library room located in the new annex building on Lane Street. Plans for the summer will be discussed. All members of the board are urged to be present. The meeting wil) begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. Buchanan Youth, Aged 6, Passes Gregory Allan Buchanan, 8-year-, old son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard E. Buchanan, died at a local hos pital Saturday following a prolong ed illness. He was born at Medford on March 4, 1950, and moved to Rose burg with his parents in June 1955, when his father' was transferred here with the U. S. National Bank. Surviving besides, the parents are a sister, Claudia Ann; a broth er, Earl, both of Roseburg; pa ternal grandparents. Joseph N. Buchanan of Gold Hill and Mrs. Henry Blackwell of Fields Land ing. Cam., maternal grandparents, Frank Strahan of Ft. Klamath and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Mathes of Ashland; and great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Bennett of Hillsboro. The body has been removed to Long & Orr Mortuary, and will be taken to Medford for services at Conger-Morris Mortuary Wed nesday at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Newell Morgan of the First Chris tian Church of Roseburg officiat; ing. Concluding services and in terment will follow in the Mem ory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, mends may make donations to a memorial fund for the boy. They may be sent to First Christian Church or Long 4 Orr Mortuary. WRITERS CLUB TO MEET The Roseburg Writers Club will hold its last regular meeting of the season on Wednesday at the home of Dr. R. D. Sinclair, 1479 N.W. Mulholland Drive, at 8 p.m. Election of officers, a workshop program for the summer months, pointers on speaking on the radio and plans for a Poetry Day dinner will be on the program. Members are especially urged to be present. Visitors are always welcome. Harris Ellsworth returned home to Roseburg to cost his vote in the 1956 primary. The incumbent congressman in Oregon's Fourth Congressional District was unopposed for the Republican nomination. He will face Charles O. Porter, Eugene, in the fall general election. Representative Ellsworth voted in his home precinct of Lauielwood. Above, he signs the poll book. (Paul Jenkins) Southern Pacific Excursion Train Gets Riddle Salute Several hundred Riddle residents turned out Saturday afternoon to see a rare sight a Southern Pa cific passenger train. The train, carrying about 125 people on a California-Nevada Rail road Historical Society tour, stop ped in various Douglas- County cities. Sunday, it headed back to San Francisco from Eugene by way of SP's main, line. Over 100 Riddle people lat er rode the train to Myrtle Creek as guests of, SP. The excursion director was very enthusiastic over the Cow Creek Canyonv scenery, Mrs. Best said. A couple from New Hampshire came west especially to make the trip through northern California and southern Oregon. Southern Pa cific officials took many pictures, and nickel ore samples were tak en so they could be sent to the president of the railroad. Riddle was the only town on the north-bound trip which put on a special observance for the train, which arrived about 4 p.m. Ash land, Medford, Grants Pass and Roseburg were among the stops on the Siskiyou line, which for merly was SP's main line. Passenger service on the Una was discontinued last summer. Since that time, there have been attempts to have SP restore serv ice. Hearings on the matter were held recently at Roseburg and Medford. West Coast1 Airlines Seeks Nonstop Permit SEATTLE W West Coast Air lines is seeking a permit for two way nonstop aervice between North Bend-Coos Bay and Port land. The line reported Saturday it has applied to the Civil Aeronautics Board. The airline said the Coos Bay area is topped only by Portland and Seattle as an originating point for its passenger traffic.
