Many, tak- other textured woolens such as ug cues irom tne urieni, are I cioua-uke tleece bamboo-pole-slim. in others, the narrowness is eased by broader shoulder treat ments or gradually widening hem lines, achieved by flat width at front and back spreading from a natural shoulder line. Coats are frequently designed to pair easily with dresses for a costume effect. Novelty fabrics with unusual tex tures the "knit look" is news add distinction to spring's simple yet sophisticated coat lines. Blends of silk and wool that have a soft tweed or silken effect are of major importance, followed closely by woven wools and silks. Linens too are beautiful in tweed and basket-weave effects. Often they are blended with wool for fabrics with wool's warmth and moldabuity and linen's texture qualities. Suited to Fabrics Especially suited to the new tex tured fabrics is the Orient-inspired coat. Generally it follows tho caf tan or mandarin silhouette with stalk-slim lines and deep slits at the side seams. Often this coat is decorated with embroidery and other detail. Pale beige tones are most effective in setting off the woven fabrics. The illusion of a broader shoul der line is sometimes rrealprt with Vapelet sleeves or deep capes directing the eye to the top, at other times with dropped shoulders or yoke seams. Wrap coats, taper ing iiiivi-rcepuuiy 10 ine nemune, also give the effect of shoulder width. Empire Is Important Empire silhouettes, with hieh seams from which the coat bells slightly to the hemline, are im portant for spring. Bow treatments of ribbon or fancy jewel touches add to the regal effect of the style. The tunic look, so important last fall, has been modified for spring to a tunic length coat, gaining back interest through blousing, wide flat bands or back detail. Ihe unfitted reefer or tuhe Chesterfield scores a hit as an in terpretation of spring's popular easy-slim silhouette. It is generally seen in smooth wools or tweedy silks. Because it steps so nicelv into summer, the versatile shortie is a star of the spring coat picture. Newest ones have nanel hnrkc nnH are hip length. They are prettiest Ensembles Take To Short Tops Sheath dresses take new part ners for spring, teaming with bo leros or other short jackets, r or stoles. Result is a distinctive ensemble look that vies for popu larity wiin tne long javorcd coat and dress costume. Jackets, cropped at the waist or even shorter, make themselves noticed in a number of delightful ways. Some are straight and stand out from the body; some are easv- fitting. Others are straight in front bloused in back. Both front and back closings are used. The cape ensemble provides equally relrcshing interest, par ticularly in eioow lengin styles. Capelets with back blousing or in the form of huge white collars are designer favorites and present striking highlight atop slim woolens. Stoics have returned as an im portant costume item, worn over Doth daytime and evening dresses. Though mostly wide and un- adorned, some stoles feature but tons and pockets, producing handsomely integrated effect. Pretty and practical fashion is the short-sleeved costume dress de signed to be worn alone just as effectively as with a jacket. The addition of three new coat lengths to the coat and dress group is a noteworthy event. The perennial full length coat continues to be the top favorite here, but seven-eighths and three- quarter models are becoming in creasingly popular, and the tunic promises to score as well. HAVE MANY LOOKS Party-going fashions for juniors include a variety of looks. They may follow the sleek, sophisticated line, turn to the tunic, or flare out into floating skirts of solid-colored chiffon or printed silk. Tun.
