Calapooia Club Raises $230 For Polio Drive The Calapoois Women's Club met at the clubhouse this week. A pot-tuck dinner wai served at noon to 24 memhers and children. During the business meeting the polio chairman reported that over $230 had been raised. The Polly anna program is to be discontin ued. Mrs. Hand was appointed to head the committee to siart a quilt for next year's polio drive. She chose Hazel Haines and Nora Stephens to help her. A quilt was made for the welfare committee. The club's birthday jar was turned over for the Cancer Fund. Hostesses for the meeting were Jean Knapple, Alice Millot and Kitty Cole. The next meeting will be Starch 21. The men didn't have to worry about getting wet, as they could walk right up to the reeds and cut them at ice level. Vets' Employment Clinic Scheduled Here March 19 A veterans' employment clinic will be held in Roseburg on March 19, according to Don Frear, Doug las County veterans' service offi cer, j The clinic, one of several sched uled in Oregon, will be conducted by the U. S. Civil Service Com mission in cooperation with the 1 major veterans' organizations and eight federal and state agencies, i ' The clinic will be headed by George A. Reid, Seattle, regional! veterans' federal employment rep-1 resentative. He will advise on job opportunities and examination I qualifications, as well as rights and benefits of veterans' prefer ence in federal employment. Information also wiil be given by representatives of the following agencies: Veterans Administration, State Dept. of Veterans Affairs, the Governor's Committee on Em ployment of the Physically Handi capped, U. S. Dept. of Labor, State Employment Service and the Bu reau of Veterans Re-employment Rights. The evening meeting- will he in the Veterans Memorial Building on Garden Valley Road. They also stopped in Coos i day to visit Charles Zimmerman.; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Rust went to Eugene Monday, and took their son, Jack, to have his arm X-ray-! ed. The doctor put a new cast on his arm. Mrs. Rust reports he is recovering nicely. EXAMINER DUE HERE A drivers license Examiner will be on duty in Roseburg Thursday and Friday at 642 SK Kane Street between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Persuns wishing original li censes or permits to drive are ask ed to file applications well ahead of the scheduled closing hour in order to assure time for comple tion of required test. The younger girls organized their club and elec ted officers. Judy Bacon was elec ted president; Carolyn Rippslein, vice president; Clara Nichols, sec retary; Joanne Roadman junior leader, and Airs. Munson, adult leader. Melrose PTA Members To Attend Convention The Melrose PTA made plans at its meeting this week for several of its members to attend the stale convention to be held in Eugene in April. Principal Cal Peterson reported plans for purchase of a pottery kiln tor school use are now being com pleted. The kiln will be purchased with funds raised bv the PTA spon sored carnival held at the school last fall. A report pertaining lo distribu tion of anti-polio vaccine was giv en by Mrs. Ivan Rogers. A nominating committee for of ficers for the coming year was elected. Members of the commit tee are Ms. W. R. Thompson, Cal Peterson and Dennis Johnston. The fifth grade room won parent attendance count. Highlighting the program was a playlet presented by Mrs. Karl 'ljofman, Founders' Day chairman, entillcd, "To Every Child Alive." those taking part were Mrs. Wil bur Thompson, Mrs. Robert Man Ining, Mrs. Clayton Klein, Mrs. Dennis Johnston, Mrs. Donald Isakson, Mrs. Sibley Neilsen. Mrs. Chris Wulff, Mrs. Ross Birlchcl and Mrs. Joe Sand. Other features of the program enjoyed were square dances by a group of intermediate students di rected by Mrs. Barbara Busetto. :and a piano solo by Mrs. Don ; Rowe. who also accompanied the , parents in group singing.
