Williami Roseburg Store Monogram Cigar Store To Close On Saturday Night 8 Laura Olton Staff WHtar, Ntwt-Rtvi.w More than 60 yeari ayo, no one ran remember just when, a har ness maker by the name of Elian M. Moore expanded downtown Hoseburs's business area when he had a building erected. In following years, one business remained in the structure as oth ers came and went. That long slay ends Saturday night at 10 when the Monogram Cigar Store doors lock for the final time. Ixtng a meeting apot for loggers and others, it is believed to be the oldest business, in one loca tion, in the KoseburK area. It hous es near-historic showpieces, and stili contains the comradery and respectability which has made its life long. Behind the douhle door entry way which downtown shoppers pass daily at 228 N. Jackson St., are examples of advertising and furniture which attest to the dura bility of the establishment, run to day bv William DeBolt. Old Ads To Vitw Wonderful, action-packed card board billboards advertise smoking tobaccos, from their places hinh above the front room counter. They are old, for the "Velvet (Jirl" rides astride two charging steeds, straight down into the eyes of the smoker. A demure old-fashioned lass, in flowery plume hat, gently waves a lace-like fan as she lauds the virtues of an unnamed cinar. To her riyht another Victorian belle heralds the genuine smoking glory of "genuine" Bull Durham. A similarly gentle, not-so-brave bull stands quietly at her side. I he Monogram interior is split into two rooms. The front houses f the bar which has a well-worn j brass foot railing. In back are a ( few pool tables and a comfortable j pot-bellied stove which patrons can . gather around in cold weather and ! swap stories. The original owner of the build-1 ing, Elias Moore, was the father of f a Roseburg woman who has he come more famed than her dad. The daughter was I .ill te Moore and she inherited the Moore property. When she died, it was learned that the Moore property In which Ihe cigar store has been located, had been deeded to the U.S. gov ernment. It was only this past full that all of the former Moore property on Jackson Street was purchased by i C. I). Albright and Paul K. Kyan. ' both of Roseburg. The change in ownership is one reason the Mono gram is closing. DeUolt's lease ex pires Dec. Ill at midnight. He's planning to reopen in another lo cation "sometime after the first of the veiir." This week DeBoH was imnble to recollect a single "rear character. Ho says any who wandered through generally stayed a couple of days and then left. And Im couldn't think of instances when patrons hadn't been well behaved.
