Three PCC Tilts On Tap Saturday By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS West Coast football moves into the back stretch of the 1955 race this weekend with Pacific Coast Conference action taking the spot light from intersecttonal activity for the first time. Three conference clashes are on the Saturday slate and two have a definite bearing on the cham pionship. A pair of intersectionals and a backyard battle between two strong independents wrap up the mid-October schedule. The top PCC tilts match Stan ford against Washington at Seat tle and Southern California against California at Berkeley. The third pairs Washington State and Ore gon State at Corvallis. As usual, a Friday night game at Los Angeles puts the show on the road. Friday night's clash be tween UCLA and Iowa once was billed as a possible Rose Bowl 1351 So smooth I it leaves you ilir breathless qrttxiest -name J 1lnf)l m vuunrt td proof Made from 100 grain neutral lpirio. Set. Piwc Smirnoff Fit. lac. Hartford, Conn. preview. But the Big Ten Hawk eyes have been a disappointment. Oregon goes to Arizona for a Saturday night non-conference con test and San Jose State entertains arch-rival College of the Pacific. Idaho, beaten five straight times, has an open date. Stanford, still seeking its first conference win, will throw the best passing offense against the Huskies' second best aerial defense. The Indians' have averaged 129 yards a game overhead while Washington has limited its foes to a modest 76. The Huskies, with southpaw Sandy Lederman rein stated as second-string quarter back, need a fourth triumph to remain deadlocked with UCLA for the league lead. Third-running Southern Califor nia presumably gets a soft touch in California. The young Bears, who looked to be improving, slumped to a 21-0 shutout by Ore gon last week while the Trojans were belting Wisconsin. The only hope at Berkeley was that the team would become fired up by campus criticism of Coach Pappy Waldorf and the squad. Neither Washington State nor Oregon State has a finger in the title action, but both are eager for a second conference triumph and the game should he close. UCLA, scared by a second-half Stanford splurge a week ago, is expected to go all-out against the Hawkeves, who have been clob bered by Wisconsin and tied by Purdue in Big Ten play. A Bruin win would give the PCC a 4-2 bulge over Big Ten opposition. Oregon needs a victory over Arizona to maintain over-all inter sectional superiority for the Coast. In 17 games, PCC teams have won only eight. Herds Being Stalked FAIRBANKS. Alaska m Stalked by wolves and besieged by hunters, caribou continued to surge across the Taylor Highway by the hundreds Friday seeking their winter feeding grounds in Northern Alaska. The herd, estimated by the Fish and Wildlife Service to exceed 30,000, is migrating from near the Canadian boundary to its natural wintering ground in remote moun tainous country northeast of here. While unpredictable c a r i bo u herds often cross Alaska highway, this is one of the few times thous ands of the animals have made themselves convenient to hunters during the short caribou season. And hundreds of hunters from all parts of the territory are tak ing advantage of the good shoot ing. Hunters from larger cities are joining native Indian families to harvest the meat. fit-, Oct. 21, 1?53 The Nwi-Revlew, Roseburg, Ore. 7 Crucial College Games On Tap This Week Former World's Flyweight Champ Succumbs At Bar PHILADELPHIA Ifi Joseph Loscalxo, 45, former world's fly weight boxing champion, col lapsed and died Wednesday whil. sitting at th. bar of a downtown cafe. By THB ASSOCIATED PRESS College foolball heads into the second half of its 1955 schedule (his weekend, and most conference championships and the big New Year's Day bowl games ire far from settled. But the men arc be ing separated from the boys, and a lot of light is beginning to filter through the shadows. One of the major games tomor row involving conference rivals brings together Oklahoma, peren nial champs of the Big Seven, and Colorado, both undefeated. Okla homa is favored, although if there is any Big Seven team with a chance to beat them out of an Orange Bowl assignment it's Colorado. Maryland, which is expected to represent the Atlantic Coast Con ference in the Orange Bowl, will have a scrap on its hands against once-beaten Syracuse in another big battle of the day. Michigan, the nation's No. 1 team just ahead of Maryland, has its eyes on the Rose Bowl- How ever, the Wolverines have a bit of business this week with Minne sota in the Big Ten Conference scramble. Wisconsin, tied at the top of the Big Ten heap with Michigan, must knock off Ohio State Saturday to remain in the running. Clemson got the weekend rolling yesterday with a 28-14 Atlantic Coast Conference decision over South Carolina. The victory, de cided in the first period when Clemson's Joe P a g 1 i e i scored twice, put the Tigers in a first place tie with Maryland with a 2-0 record. There are five big games on to night and one will be watched with interest, allhoueh it has no bearing on conference or bowl bids. UCLA, a favorite for the Pa civic Coast Conference title and the Rose Bowl job if it can get past Washington later, goes out side the brotherhood to meet Iowa of the Big Ten.
