CE Official Says Exploiting Halted On Atom Reactors WASHINGTON Lfl General Electric's top atomic executive de clared Tuesday that official sec recy and lack of an assured fuel supply are obstructing industry from the exploiting "a wide open" foreign market for atomic power reactors. I and general manager of its Atom-1 ic Product Division, addressed 400 members of the Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc., which opened a three! day meeting here in connection i with the country's first atomic trade fair. 1 McCune revealed that most ma- jor American companies brought 1 back from the recent atoms-for-1 peace conference at Geneva "ma-! jor prospects for sales in the Eu-I ropean market." ' This business hf nrnrlii-lod will gear up the industry for "our own tremendous market coming up." "We. and many other firms, have in mind right now requests from many foreign governments and private groups to submit pro posals on reactors varying from research reactors to large power installations," McCune said. 7 Pilof Meat Inspection Program Gets Started SALEM Wl The state's pilot meat inspection program was started in Salem this week, the Oregon Department of Agriculture I announced Wednesday. For the next three weeks, every I slaughtering plant in the Salem area will have all of its meat in-1 spected. I The Legislature authorized the pilot program to find out if a I complete state inspection program is necessary, and how much it i would cost. I Similar pilot inspections will be made in other sections of the state. McCune said he feels sure the United States can retain tight sec recy on atomic weapons work but relax on imformation concerning peacetime uses of the atom. McCune predicted that the Ge neva meeting, by revealing that Britain and Russian technology is approximately abreast of this country's in peace time applica tions of nuclear power, may achieve the elimination of "exces sive secrecy" in which this country has sheltered this knowledge. Know land (R-Caiif) opposed Thursday proposals of some other senators that this country sell some of its bulging farm surpluses to Soviet Russia or other Communist na tions. Such action, he told newsmen, "would strengthen their economic and military organizations. A lot1 of free people and nations in the world could use our farm sur pluses." In a speech Wednesday night before a University of North Caro lina forum at Chapel Hill, Know land rejected the theory that smiles and words of Soviet spokes men in recent months indicate an easing of world tensions. Instead, Knowiand called for a continued tough policy with the Kremlin bosses and predicted that this will be an issue in next year's elections of a President and Con gress. "No political party and no candi date will be able to evade or submerge such an issue in 1956," Knowiand said, adding: "If there is to be a change in policy it should be by deliberate choice of the American people and not by a diplomatic shell game". . . Asked by newsmen if this and other blunt phrases were a criti cism of foreign policies of Presi dent Eisenhower or Secretary of Slate Dulles, Knowiand insisted they were not.
