As the new ears were introduced Chrysler resident L. L. Colbert said the record number sold so far this year is not a temporary phenomenon; that there js "every reason to expect a continued high level of demand." The showing, at Chrysler's prov ing grounds at Chelsea, west of here, disclosed that Chrysler, like other car makers, has been carry lag on extensive safety tests. In these tests, particular em. hasis has been given to a new type door latch, designed to pre vent doors from popping open in any but most unusual crashes. Chrysler calls them "life guard" latches. They will be standard on all Chrysler Cor. cars The push button drive, to be Coast Guard Decides To Commission Caston WASHINGTON w - The Coast Guard announced Monday it has decided to commission N. Pierre Gaston who was graduated from its officer candidate school last April but was not given a com mission because of questions raised about the loyalty of his mother. The commission as an ensinn in the Coast Guard Reserve will be dated as of April. Gaston has he?n serving as an apprentice seaman in Coast Guard headquarters here. Answer to Previous Puzzto . Congress has authorized sale of the homes by the Atomic Energv ! Oak Ridge, with 32.500 inhabi j tants, and Richland, with 28,000, were built originally by Army Kn ginecrs as part of the huge Man hattan Project. The announcements said two nationally recognized appraisers and consultants Richard lla'l of Washington, 1). C, and Watson A. Bowes of Denver have been named to assist the FHA. Hall will be technical advisor at Oak Ridge, and Bowes at Rich land. The appraisal job will include setting values on home sites and on commercial and other properties as well as residences. Push Button Controls, Safety unit consists of buttons for neutral, low. drive and reverse which are illuminated for night driving. Chrysler emphasizes that the left-ot-the-wheel installation keeps the buttons out of reach of chil dren. It noted also that shifting with the new device is as gentle as operating a pushbotton radio. Linkage between the control and transmission consists of a single I armored cable. Actuation of the ; various gears is accomplished when the cable moves varying distances as the pushbottons are depressed. I The device is designed so the ! engine cannot be started in any gear except neutral. Another built ; in. safety factor prevents the trans ; mission from accidentally being : shifted into reverse at speeds above :10 miles an hour. Offered as optional equipment ; are safety seat belts and a newly designed vacuum-operated brake i system with automoatic transmis sion installations. I Chrysler calls the new body styling concept "flight-s w e e p." Quarles Say Air Force To Continue Training WASHINGTON M Secretary Donald A. Quarles says the A i r Force plans neither to stiffen nor to ease its course of training men I lo survive as prisoners of war. A major optional Installation for Appeals Court Is Requested To Overrule NLRB Decision WASHINGTON Ufi The U.S. Court of Appeals here has been I asked to overrule a National Labor Relations Hoard decision that a union, in its capacity as an em ployer, is not. subject to the Taft Hartley Law. ban on unfair labor practices. The AFL Office Employes Un ion, and its local 11 at Portland, Ore., has petitioned the court to set aside the 3-2 opinion by the NLRB Aug. 28 that unions in such cases are covered by its policy j aiamsi lakm? cases involving non j profit organizations. The NLRB majority overruled College Education Value Estimated By Bureau WASHINGTON tf-How much is a college education worth in cold cash? On the average, $31,000, two Cen sus Bureau officials reported lo the annual meeting of the Amer ican Sociological Society. Paul C. Click and Herman P. Miller said: "Over a lifetime, the average college graduate can expect to re ceive about $100,000 more income than the average high school grad uate. Since the direct and indirect costs of the college education are roughly estimated at $9,000, it is concluded that a college education represents a sound investment from a purely monetary view point." The census men cautioned, how ever, that a college degree is no guarantee of higher earnings. Some specific details of the new cars, especially power output and j compression ratios were withheld for later announcement separately by each of the divisions. These announcements are expected to start next week with public intro ductions of the new cars set for some time in October. Prices of the new cars also are being withheld until the public in troductions. the trial examiner and dismissed the case. Howard Conghlin, president of the Office Employes Union, said "We think the NLRB decision is wrong as a matter of law, and intend to fi"ht in the courts until this is established." Coughlin said the Taft-Hartley Act "specifically provides that la bor unions are employers when dealing with their own employes, and are subject to the unfair labor practice provisions of that law just as is any other employer." He said the Warner Labor Act also "is pointedly clear" that labor unions must be treated as other employers when they deal with their own employes. "The Office Employes Interna tional Union believes that every union ought to want to deal fairly with its own employes, bargain collectively with them, and set hi?h standards for waces. hours and working conditions," Coughlin said. High Iniuranee Office Tue., Sept. 13, 1955 The 'Collins Critical Of Republic Fund As Subversive WASHINGTON Ofl-A charge that the Fund for the Republic threat ens national security has been met with a reply that the fund "is dedicated to the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution." The charge was made Sunday by Seaborn P. Collies, national commander of th American Legion, who called on three million Lesionnaires to "have no truck" with activities sponsored by the fund. Collins said "it appears that the Fund for the Republic. . :is threatening and may succeed in crippling the national security." In New York, Dr. Robert M. Hutchins, head of the fund and i one-lime president of the Univer , sity of Chicago, retorted: 1 "It is too bad that Mr. Collins I had not bothered to try to find nut I the purposes and activities of the fund before he attacked it. "The fund is dedicated to the principles of the Declaration of In dependence and the Constitution." Collins said the fund has carried on "constant, loaded criticism of congressional an' administration efforts to resist Communist infil tration." He slid this "proDaganda is considered by the American Le gion to be as dangerous as it is untrue. . ." Television Receiver :ces Said Rising NEW YORK w Prices of television receivers are rising. A $20 hike in prices on most models is being made by Allen B. Du Mont Laboratories Inc. Motorola has raised prices on 13 models $10 to $30 a set. Emerson Radio and Admiral Corp. announced last month they were upping prices $10 to $20 a set. Other manufacturers cite ris ing costs of labor and materials and indicate they will join in mark ups.
