Aussies Take Back Davis Cup FOREST HILLS, N.Y. W-The road back to supremacy in the Davis Cup will be a long one for the United States unless Lewis Hoad and Ken Rosewall succumb to the lure of a pot of professional gold. Australia's 20-year-old Whiz Kids showed themselves complete mas ters of Tony Trabert, Vic Seixas and Ham Richardson, America's top players, when they won the Challenge Kouna by a crushing 5-0 count. Even after they had won the cup by sweeping past Seixas and Trabert in the singles and doubles for an insurmountable 3-0 lead, they continued to apply relentless pressure in the final two singles vesterday. The results were a 7-9, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 victory by Head over Seixas and a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 tri umph by Rosewall over Richard son. Where to now? No one really knows. Leagues are almost full for the upcoming season. A surprising number of entries have poured in the past week, and we even have an overflow in one of the best leagues. We are reserving two or three spots for teams which bowied last season, but which haven't yet con firmed positively for this season. However, with enough teams al ready in or promised, we can't wait much longer. It's just getting too close to the dead line, which is Sept. 8, 1, 14 and 15. So, we are going to give you an other quick rundown on now they stack up, which will be slightly changed from the line-ups of a few weeks ago. In addition, we might say this list isn't hard and fast, as one or two teams may yet be switched to other leagues to balance as near as possible ev ery league. IF YOU haven't yet notified the secretary of your line-ups, get busy. Monday night it's Sun Studs, Myrtle Creek, Harmony House, Jacklin News, Coen Supply, Unit ed Realty, Dairy Queen, Bill Stock Motors, Wiley's Lefties, Moose Lodge, Business Men's Assurance, Harris Plumbing, News-Review, Hull's Lumber Co! and Myrtle Creek Elks. The first eightoa r e scheduled for City, and the other seven for Town. Holding the eighth spot for a day or two for a last year's team. Wednesday nights should see Pal Motors, Roseburg Books, Jovin Brakes, West Coast Building, City Drive In Market, B.P.O. Elks, F. 0. Eagles, and Evans Products in the Industrial; with Myrtle Dairy, Winston Drugs, Howard's Hard ware, Postal Employes, Fairhaven Cleaners, Moose Lodge, Tenmile Store and Veterans' Hospital fol lowing in the Metropolitan. Both leagues are set. ON THRUSDAY the Commercial should be made up of Bruton's Shoe Repair, VFW, The Forrest ers, Chrystallite Tile, Bill Han son's Service, Hardtoppers, Bob Qind Gene's Union Gas, and Turn around Inn; while the Merchants should field U. S. Navy Recruit ing Office, Moose Lodge, Umpqua Chief Flour, Coca Cola, Self Serv ice Laundry, Patterson's Bakery, Yoncalla Lions, and one other not yet definite. rnaay nights will see the Clas sic Junior overfilled, with the fol lowing applications: Snyder's Ra dio, Sun Studs, Moose Lodge, Win-ston-Dillard Smoke Eaters, First Christian Church, HUdebrand and Kees Construction Co., Boyd's Coffee, Howard Cooper Corp., and Junior Chamber of Commerce; while the Classical is still open for a couple more teams to supple ment Ken Bailey Insurance, Rose burg Lumber, Roseburg Alleys, Pepsi Cola, Keystone Machine Works and Myers Signal Gas. THE LASSIES got their machine all oiled up and ready to go last Tuesday night. They will hit the runways Sept. 13, (It's not unlucky either), with the whole 16 teams in one league. They would like to know why the Washington Senators are anchored in seventh place in the American League. Nothing that the Senators showed yesterday and, for that matter the entire season when playing Cleveland, indicated that they belong nearly 30 games back ol the league-leading New York Yankees. The Indians were all set to move into first place yesterday if the Yankees and Chicago White Sox should split, which they did. Then Cleveland ran smack into the red hot Senators, who had just fin ished polishing off the White Sox in two out of three games. When the twin bill was over, the Tribe found themselves on the short end of 8-2 and 13-4 scores and in third place, a game back of the Yanks with whom they were tied when the day. started. It's been like that most of the season with the Senators. They hold a 12-7 edge over Cleveland. Yanks Homer For Win The Yankees beat Chicago 6-1 in the opener on the strength of home runs by Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra but the White Sox came back to take the second 3-2. Bob Kennedy drove in all of their runs with a first-inning homer. The split moved the Sox into second place, half a game back. Meantime, the Boston Red Sox edged back into the pennant pic ture with a 14-2 decision over Kan sas City. They're now 3V games on the top. The Orioles and Tigers game was rained out. In the National League, t hOs cellar-dwelling Pittsburgh Pirates won a double-header from the Milwaukee Braves 5-3 and 2-0 while the Brooklyn Dodgers were downing St. Louis 6-1 to increase their margin to 11W games. Phils Nip Brav.s Twice The surging Philadelphia Phillies made it nine victories in their last 10 outings with 7-6 and 8-2 victories over the Cincinnati Rcdlegs. Chi cago shut out New York 3-0. Nine hits, six of them for extra bases, in the middle innings plus the sham relief pitching of Chuck I Stobbs carried the Senators to their first-game victory over the Indians. Stobbs gave up only one hit over the last 6 1-3 innings. The second game was a pitchers' duel between Mike Garcia and Mickey McDcrmott until the sev enth when the Senators went wild and racked up eight runs at the expense of Don Mossi and Ray Narleski. McDermolt allowed only six hits, including homers by Ralph Kiner and Al Smith. Mickey Mantle's three-run hom er, his 34th, in the third inning gave Whitey Ford a comfortable margin to work on as he chalked up his 15lh victory in the opener against the White Sox. Then Yogi Berra connected with his 23rd with one aboard in the fifth to make it still easier. Bob Kennedy settled the night cap in the first inning when he homered off Bob Turley with two mates aboard.
