East- Texas Klan Move To Revive School Fuss Stirs I.ONGVIEW, Tex. Wv-The state attorney general says he is check ing reports by his investigators that an attempt to revive the Kit Klux Klan is under way in east Texas, apparently to fight integra tion in public schools. Atty. Gen. John Ben Shepperd said his investigators have been checking Klan activities in 23 east Texas counties (or more than a week. He didn't identify the organ izers or say where they were from. There is a heavy Negro popula tion in east Texas and feelings about segregation are strong. Citi zens Councils have been formed in at least four communities to fight the Supreme Court order against segreeation in public SCHOOL SEPT. 1 Riddle schools will be in full session all day Sept. 1 and 2, but will be dismissed for Labor Day Sept. 5. reports correspondent Erma Best. Many school boards have announced they will not integrate schools this year. Shepperd said the Citizens coun cils should not be coiifused with the Ku Klux Klan. "Citizens groups use legal means," he said. "The Klan uses fear, hatred and illegal violence." He said all slate agencies are pledged to fight the Klan and local prosecutors are on the watch for any rebirth of it. Texas laws provide stiff D&nal- ties for operations by masked or hooded organizations. Reedsport Schools Set To Start Classes Sept. 6 The first day of school at Reeds port is Sept. 6. The faculty will arrive Aug. 29 for meetings, and registration will start Aug. 30. A teachers institute is scheduled at Coos Bay Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. An in-service training session is scheduled for teachers Sept. 2. ORIO MEET SET A special meeting for youths interested in turning out for foot ball ii scheduled Aug. 22 at 9 p.m. at the high school. Football prac tice starts Aug. 29. School Boards Set To Study Problems Sometime on or before Nov. 1, Douglas County Supt. Kenneth Barueburg will call a county con vention of all school hoard mim. bers. And the Droblem that facei them is staggering. They have been re quested by Gov. Paul Patterson to study problems of the jchool districts of the county and make recommendations on how to cor rect them. These recommendations will be passed on to a governor's commit tee made up of four members from the Oregon House, three from the senate and four selected by Pat terson.
