Air Force Admits Plans To Produce Moonlight Clow WASHINGTON I The Air Force has announced it will try to create artificial moonlight next month. The aim i to clear up some of the mysteries about the compo sition of the atmosphere, 60 miles up. Scientists of the Air Force Re search and Development Command will conduct the experiments be ginning about Sept. 6 in New Mex ico. The principal purpose of the project, the Air Force said, is to determine the accuracy, of scien tific beliefs, that a layer of natural sodium hangs in the thin atmos phere about 60 miles above the earth. Oak OR 3-6123 The result of the experiment, the Air Force added, might also sup ply important data for- the man made earth satellite that, the United States plans to hurl into space between 200 and 300 miles from the earth in 19S7. The moonlight experiment will involve the launching of a rocket containing a few pounds of sodium which will be released as vapor, probably by the explosion of a grenade, at the desired altitude. Scientists have based their be lief in the presence of a layer of sodium in the ionosphere on the existence of a glow high in the skies. They theorize that it could be caused by the reflection of sun light on minute particles of so dium. If the rocket-launched sodium glows brilliantly when released at 60 miles, the Air Force said, it will confirm the scientific belief in the -existence of a natural sodium layer at that level. If elected lower, the Air Force experts said, the sodium would not produce any light for technical reasons. Authorities said arrest of a sus pected thief uncovered the kid naping, and his confession brought about the capture of an accomp lice. The major, Sylvester Murau, 48, was lured from his home in Heuback near Darmstadt in West Germany by two agents who worked with Murua's own daught er, a resident of the Soviet Zone. Plied with drink and perhaps with dope, the West Berlin police said, Murau was sprited across the frontier and brought to East Berlin on July 23 or 24. One of their top diskings has been "I Get So Lonely." Life Termer Escapes, Takes Bloodhounds Along ALLEN, Okla. Utl A 34-year-old life termer apparently has made good his escape from the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and taken six searching bloodhounds with him. Six carloads of officers thought they had Louis Jones, 34, Ponca City, Okla., surrounded last week in brush covered co untry near Allen in southeastern Oklahoma. The six bloodhounds, which had been on Jones' trail, rushed into the area and the officers closed in, guns ready. However, when they converged, Jones had van ishedand the bloodhounds with him. The handler of the bloodhounds from the prison then confided to -officers that Jones, who was serv ing life for first degree rape, had been a trusty at the prison and was assigned to handling the dogs. Several farmers later reported that they had seen Jones with the dogs, apparently happy at his heels, moving out of the area. Construction Activity Makes Climb During July WASHINGTON l Construction activity climcd in July to nearly four billion dollars and raised to $23,100,000,000 the total for the first seven months of the year. The Labor and Commerce de partments, reporting the figures Friday, said both are new records. The rate of activity, measured by new construction put in place and adjusted for seasonal factors. was at an annual rate of 42 billion dollars'also a record. Rich ards (D-SC) says the Communist peace offensive has put Secretary of State Dulles under growing pressure "to compromise or be de stroyed." Richards, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he has "never been more dis turbed" lest Red peace talk dis sipate "our patience, our will and our determination to resist." "I think Secretary Dulles under stands the Communists and prop erly evaluates the issues,'' hi said in an interview. "I don't believe that the pres sures that will be exerted on him in the name of peace will weaken his resolve to stand firm no matter what winds blow. "But the pressures will grow and grow to make concessions to the Communists, to recognize Red China, to abandon our commit ments to weaker allies, to enfold in our arms the Communists prom ises of peace."
