Back From Trip Mrs. Mona Huet and children returned to their home here Sunday, following a trip by automobile to San Francisco. Goes To Timberlint William Jclski of Lewis Travel Service left Friday by plane for Timberline Lodge where he will be a guest at Pan American World Airways for an Oregon sales and training meet ing. Y. Allison. Goes To Saltm Mrs. 0. C. Langfield of Roseburg left Friday for Salem to visit her husband who is employed as an electrician on the new Meier and Frank store there. The store covers a c.ty block. Langfield had a 5-months contract in Seattle and later was in Klamath Falls on a construction job before going to Salem. Accepts Position Dale Hill, who was field representative of Veterans Affairs at the Veterans Administration, has nccepted a po sition with the State Highway Commission in Roseburg. Carl Steinert of Portland is replacing Hill. Steinert is moving his family to Roseburg about Aug. 5. Mystery Drama Well Presented In By LAURA OLSON Staff Writer, News-Review A psychological mystery drama pointing up author J. B. Priest ley's belief that "we dor't live alone" was presented in Rose burg Thursday evening. "An Inspector Calls" was t'le third offering in the 1955 Kiwanis Summer Theater Series. Capably written by Priestley and well cast with University of Oregon stu dents, the three-act play was a 1 jeweled offering. Its plot concerns personality re actions of a well-oricntcd and dividually enmeshed in the life web class English family and the fiance of the daughter as they are in dividually emeahed in the life web which confined and apparently caused a young woman's suicide. I tach family member, it devel ops, nas piayea a pari in me tragic events which stockpiled un til an Eva Smith (known also by other names) ended her life by drinking disinfectant. Knowledge of her death is brought to the group assembled in the Birling home to honor the engagement of Sheila Biding (Bar bara Adams) and Gerald Croft (Harold Williams) by an Inspector Goole (Bruce Holt). The father Arthur Billing (Gor don Howard) started the net when he discharged her from his mill a:ter she unsuccessfully joined in a strike fur a pay increase. The daughter later torccd her dismis sal from a store for "impcrtin ar.ee." The fiance befriended her at a bar and established her in an apartment as his mistress for a time. The son Eric (Bruce Em mons) met her later at the same bar, later fathered her unborn child and stole money from the Billing firm to help support her, until she refused his aid. And, a short time later, Mrs. Birling (Ann Winthcr) was instrumental in pic venting a Brum ley charity group giving" her assistance. Bogus Officer Luros Through direct questioning, t h e inspector brings forth the motlled story. When its implications be come evident to all, he abruptly departs alter declaring "we don't live alone. . .the time will come that if men don't learn that lesson, they'll be taught!" In a diabolic plot twist Priestle allows his players to realize they have admitted their respective sins to a bogus officer. They have learned that no Inspector Goole is employed by the police. The play closes on an almost unbearaole note. The father an swers a phone call from the po lice, informing him a young wom an has just died on the way to the infirmary and that a police in spector is "on his way to ask some questions." Superb individual performances by cast members speak well lor the taut casting of Director Dan iel Drcmpcl. Holt as Inspector Goole, is new to the local stage, but his visit will be remembered. Howard, as usual, delivered a com pelling performance. Rounding out tile cast was Miss Helen Adams, seen briefly as the maid Edna. Some 150 persons viewed the play at Central Junior High School. They were cntusiastic in applause and praise.
