Local Community News Briefs On Vacation Ken McCoy, man ager of Umpqua Valley Hardware, is on a two-weeks vacation. On Camping Trip Mr. and Mrs. Norman John and children, Steve, Douglas and Kenny, and Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Doyle and sons, Gary and Don, left Thurs day for bast Lake to enjoy a ramping and fishing trip. Bonebrake returned home Friday from a trip to Yel lowstone Park, Jackson Hole and other points of interest en route. To Coast Fishing at the coast Saturday and Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Chester Campbell, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Taylor, Lorraine and Scotty; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Trent and son, Michael; and Le anne Donnely. ' Vacation At Lake Weekend vacationers at Summit Lake in Eastern Oregon were Mr. and Mrs. Don Wright and children; Mr. and Mrs. George Case beer and sons; Mr. and Mrs. Or ville Wright and son; and Duane Khrnm. The crouD enioved fishing at the lake. In Albany Mr. and Mrs. Frc' Carls and daughters, Carla and Karen, spent the weekend in Al bany at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Patterson. Mrs. Carl's son, Gary Patterson, is spending the summer there with his grandpar ents. While there the group at tended the Timber Carnival. Roadman, Mrs Esther Baker, Luessia Fletcher, Mr. and Mrs. E. Gorton, Elwood Fisher and Paul Shanklin. Wins Honorable Mention Rob ert T. Bromps, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Bromps of Curry Road, won honorable mention in the Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild model car building competition held in Oregon this year. Bromps, 17, will be a senior at Roseburg High School in the fall. He receiv ed a $25 savings bond as an award. Hero From Minnosota John Betlach, Owatonna, Minn., and Greg Stende, Princeton, Minn., classmates in dental school at the University of Minnesota, are spending the summer in Roseburg. They are making their home at 407 Ella St. Bctlach is the brother of Miss Rae Betlach of this city. To Attend Moot Mr. and Mrs. Warren Robinson and children left today for Portland where the for mer who is a special agent for Mutual of New York will attend a sales meeting. They will return this weekend. The Robinson fam ily spent last weekend at Bend at tending the water festival and vis iting friends in that area. Car Burnod Mr. and Mrs. Bill Clarenbach II and Mr. and Mrs. Ron Hicks spent the holi day weekend at the coast. While at Winchester Bay, they were un fortunate to have Clarcnbach's new Ford car catch fire, starting in the trunk. The car was partially destroyed, the inside being burned. The motor was unharmed, and they were able to drive it home. Joins Ship ME3C Pettv Of ficer Richard" H. Bicknell left by bus Wednesday for Seattle to board his ship to go to Alaska, following his leave in Roseburg visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Bicknell. His parents went to Seattle to bring him home for his leave. During Mrs. Bicknell's vacation, Mrs. Ruth Smith took her place in the office of Indus trial Equipment. Mr. and Mrs. Maddox's two older daughters, Jeanne and Jocelyn, are in Holly wood studying ballet dancing and appearing on TV . program?. Jeanne conducts a dance studio in Astoria. Visiting Horo Mr. and Mrs. Jne R. Richev and son, David, of Klamath Falls are visiting here until Saturday with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rich ev Sr., 312 Leland Ave., and w:ib his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Richey Jr., and chil dren, Bruce and Beekie, of Win ston. After leaving here they will go to Coetir d'Alene, Idaho, to visit Mrs. Richey's parents. Leave For Corvallis Mr. and Mrs. John Howard left today for Corvallis following a visit here with the former's brother-in-law and sister, Dr. and Mrs. George E. Houck. Mir. and Mrs. Robert Zurcher and son, John, of Portland were here Wednesday at the Houck home. Mx. Zurcher is a son of Mrs. Houck. The Houcks are mak ing arrangements for moving to Portland to make their home. They recently sold their property here and have purchased a home at 3305 NE Liberty St., Portland. Mrs. Houck has a daughter, Mrs. Harvey Fisher, who resides in Portland besides her son, Robert Zurcher, and Dr. Houck also has relatives residing near where their new home is located. SPILLS! To Minnesota Mrs. Gene Steele left Thursday for Duluth, Minn, to visit relatives. She was accompanied by a woman friend from Sutherlin and a relative from Klamath Falls. The ladies plan to be gone about three weeks. Go Fishing Mr. and Mas. Harry Simon and children; Mrs. Yvonne Toppings and children, and Mrs. Rona Smith enjoyed a fish ing trip to Winchester ftay Sun day and Monday. Also going was Douglas Mentzer, Visitors Leave Mr. and Mrs. Robert' Duffield and daughters, Karen and Rose Marie, have left for their home at Raymond, Wash., following a visit in Roseburg as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hansen. ' Stops Hero Mrs. Marvin Long and two children of Areata, Calif., stopped in Roseburg to visit her sister-in-law en route to Salem to visit friends and relatives this week. Mrs. Long was formerly Carol Morley of Sutherlin, where she was Timber Queen a few years ago. Back From Coast Mr. and Mrs. 0. J. Fett and family are back at their home in Roseburg following a stay at coastal points: Visiting Horo Miss Patricia Bowen of Coquille is spending a week in Roseburg as the guest of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. William E. Donald Terho that their son, Rich ard Terho. who recently graduated from NATTC at Norman, Okla., is now attending advanced school in' Memphis, Tenn. Returns Homo Miss Linda Da mon arrived home Wednesday from Richmond, Calif., where she has been visiting relatives the last week. While in California she vis ited points of interest in San Fran cisco. She is the mother of the late Phoebe Haw- j thornc Rummell, former Roseburg music teacher who died of polio a couple of years ago. Reserve Program Purposely Weak, Claims Thomson WASHINGTON I - Rep. Thom son (R-Wyo) told senators Thurs day the nation's reserve program "is dangerously weak" because most career military officers in the Pentagon want it that way." Thomson, a combat infantry commander and instructor during World War 11, said experienced young reserve officers were not called back in larger numbers dur ing the Korean War "because it would break up the playhouse for promotion which we called "WPA." He explained that WPA in Army slang meant "West Point Protect ing Assn." Thomson was initial witness be fore the Senate Armed Services Committee as it opened public hearings on the controversial na tional reserve pian, pushed through the House after weeks of contro versy. President Eisenhower lias called the reserve program "vi tal." Sen. Russell (D-Ga), in opening the session, sharply 'criticized the administration plan approved by the House, saying it still would place the burden for active reserve duty upon young men who had served two. years under the draft or a longer period of volunteer enlistment. fil, July 8, 1955 The Newi-Rtview, Roseburg, Ore. 3 Former Glide Citizen Dies In California Word was received this week by Aldred H. Kemp, Roseburg, of Ihe death of her father, Albert M. Kemp of Ukiah, Calif. Kemp was a former resident of Glide. He is survived by his "wife, Elva; one daughter, Mrs. Wheeler W. Pierce, Ukiah, Calif.; and one son, niuicu ui nuseuuirf. Kemp, in his 80's had lived In Douglas County several years and had visited his son and family frequently.
