Premier Moshe Sharett's cabinet
resigned Wednesday after his
Mapai (Labor) Party broke with
the No. 2 faction in the coalition
government, the General Zionistsf
President Izhak Ben Zvi accepted
the resignation and immediately
began consultations with political
leaders in an effort to get some
one to form a new government.
It was expected that the Mapai,
whose 47 seats make it the largest
faction in the 120-member Knesset
(Parliament), would try to build a
new coalition without the General
Zionists. The latter have 20 seats
in the Knesset and no other party
has more than 8.

announced a sweeping program of
old age pensions for all.
A bill to become effective Jan.
1, 1957, was presented to Parlia
ment by Jacobus Surrhof, minis
ter of social affairs and public
health. It would introduce compul
sory old age insurance for all re
siding in the Netherlands, regard
less of nationality.
With the world's lowest mortal
ity rate, the burden of the aging
Dutch population is becoming more
acute every year. In another 30
years, it is estimated, 16 per cent
of the Dutch will be over 65.
The bill provides pensions for
