Beef Most Popular Feature In Nation's Food Stores Men., June 6, 1955 Tht Newt-Review, Roseburg, 0r. 3 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Beef was the most popular feature in the nation's food store last weeknd. Most often mentioned as a week end feature was chuck roast, with some markets shaving prices around six cents a pound trore a week ago. Round roast and va rious kinds of steaks will be spec ials in a number of areas. Beef is higher at wholesale, but one large chain was holding its re tail prices at week-ago levels on such popular cuts as sirloin steaks and prime ribs. However, these prices may go up this week. Legs of lamb will be unchanged or a bit higher than last week. Frying chicken prices are gen erally higher. Increases of two to six cents a pound are planned br a major chain. Ecus also may be few cents higher in your market. Butter- prices wiu show little change. If you're looking for an unusu ally good buy in vegetables, con sider the price of lettuce, iceoerg, romaine and big Boston all arc available at lower prices. There are other good buys in vegetables, among them yellow and green squash, peppers, es carole, pascal celery, and other items sucn as spinacn, raaisues, and green onions. Beets (mostly with tops), as paragus, carrots and onions also are worthwhile purchases, in the opuiMja ol prouuee , specialists. Heavy shipments of California Loot! White Dotatoes and Florida Round Whites have brought lower prices. Old crop potatoes are sell ing for about the same as a week ago. U. O. Dean Selected New Hampshire President DURHAM, N. H. UP) Dr. Eldon I.. Johnson, dean of the college of liberal arts and the graduate school of the University of Oregon will become the 13th president of the University ot wew Hampshire. His selection was announced here recently by university of ficials here. He succeeds Robert F. Chandler Jr., who resigned last June to ac cept a Rockefeller Foundation po sition. Johnson joined the faculty at Oregon in 1945, first as head of the political science department. He was elevated to the position of dean two years later. A 1929 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, he received his master's and doctor's degrees at the University of Wisconsin, where he taught before becoming director of the graduate school of the fed eral Department of Agriculture. Beans and corn went up a bit this week. Produce men consider cucumber prices rather high right now. Strawberries are lower while oranges and grapefruit continue to win a good buy rating. Catakwpes are muon lower than a week ago but still not a bargain. Constitutionality Of Oregon Law Asked Of Court OLYMPIA Wi In an apparent ly unprecedented legal action, the Washington Supreme Court has been asked to rule on 'he consti tutionality of an Oregon law. The case involves the validity ot laws passed By tne two states authorizing construction of an 11 million dollar toll bridge across the Columbia River at Vancouver and a three million dollar remod eling job on the present snan The project would bo financed by a 14 million dollar bond issue to be repaid by tolls charged on both bridges. Highways commissions of the two states and the Washington Toll Bridge Authority have asked the Washington high court to di rect Washington State Auditor Cliff Yelle to reimburse the three agencies for expenses incurred in planning the bridge and setting up the bond issue Yelle refused to honor the claims, tontending the laws of both states are unconstitutional. The Washington law, Yelle con tended, violates an agreement the state made at the titrn it pur chased the existing brioge from Clark County, At that time the state agreed not to re-establish tolls on the span. And, the auditor added, the Ore gon law contains an unlawful dele gation of legislative authority in that it allows Washington to set and collect the tolls on the two bridges.
