Cool Weather Delays Rotes For Big Festival PORTLAND I Cool weather has delayed blooms and Rose fes tival officials are concerned about the possibility of a shortage ol roses. The festival gets underway June 8 with the floral parade scheduled June 11. And gardeners at the Portland test gardens said only one bloom had made its appearance so far this year. The Royal Rosarians have had o postpone for a week their rose garden contest. They said they might have nothing to judge if the contest were held June 6 as sched uled. J. tfl A yeii- round home heating-cooling system powered by a nuclear reactor about twice the size ol an auto battery was put forth Wednesday as "a practical reality possibly wimin a tew years. Robert E. Kerry, general man ager of the Institute of boiler ft Radiator Manufacturers, made the forecast at the' institute's annual meeting, and said the new concept marks the first proposal to put atomic energy to work actually within the home itself. He indicated that if the manu facturers were to begin research on the system now, they would be in lull production by 1958. The "A-boiler" system, consist ing of the baby reactor booked up to a boiler, will be explosion-proof and safe from radioactivity, Ferry said. Placed in the garage or base ment, the system will ;oth heat and cool the home for about six years on a single charge of fis sionable material hernetically sealed within the reactoi', he said. Ferry estimated the cost of the six year charge at about $300. He said the reactor would be replaced with another sealed unit at a simi lar price after its charge had been exhausted. Institute sou.ces said the price of such a cha.ge would tend to go down as the price of nuclear fuel declines. A completely new integrated in stallation of the boiler and baby reactor would cost about $1,500, he said. In a new house, he said, savings of several hundred dollars would result from eliminating flues and chimney. It would cost around $1,000 to, convert existing boilers, according to Ferry. Quoting industry experts, Ferry pointed out the "chief foreseeable problem holding up availability of ine A-oouer system is tna need for adequate supplies of ilssionablc material at economic cost." As for engineering knowledge of design, material and -inieiding of tne reactor, wis "appears to be no longer a problem," lie said.
