The "end of year" school pic nics for the Deer Creek school chil dren, were held Wednesday and Thursday. The three lower grades traveled to Umpqua park, where they enjoyed games and a picnic. Women Would End Confusion On Discoveries By RUTH COWAN PHILADELPHIA Wl Alarmed by confusion over the Salk polio vaccine, the General Federation of Women's Clubs here is consider ing a resolution demanding better advance planning when future medical discoveries of prime im portance are announced. The resolution asks that re search scientists, manufacturers, distributors and governmental ag encies work together untiringly to assure a safe, effective plan to use for medical discoveries. Failure to do so brings confu sion, lack of confidence and heart break to the families of America, the resolution says in nothing that research is under way seeking the' cause, prevention and cure of many other ailments and diseases. "At any moment may come an nouncements which are compar able in importance to that of the discovery of the Salk polio vaccine formula with its, inestimable values," it said. By JACK BELL I WASHINGTON ( President Eisenhower said Tuesday he is fascinated by the work of the pres idency. But he gave no clear in dication whether he intends to run again. A reporter at the Presidents news conference reminded him that it will be three years Wednes day since he returned from Europe tn bes'm the camoaien which gave him the Republican presidential nomination ana enaeu wuu ms election in November, 1952. In the lieht of that fact the re porter asked the President how he UK.es politics. Eisenhower said the term polt tics has many meanings but so often it is used in a derogatory sense. In that general sense, he said, he does not like politics. But he said any man possessing the authority of the presidency and the influence that It carries in working toward a peaceful world and minimizing the danger of war finds it fascinating. The discussion of oolitlcs auo touched on the selection of Rich ard M. Nixon to be his vice evi dential running mate in 1952. Eisenhower said that shortly af ter he was nominated and the question of a vice presidential can didate came up, he wrote out the names ol live or six younger mun whom he admired. Nixon's name was among those, he added. He did not say how Nixon happened to be picked from among the five or six. Eisenhower also took occasion to say he believes the basic Dhiln sophies of the presidential and vice presidential nomines should be In harmony. He sam that if the vice presi dential nominee was not acceptable! to the head of the ticket then the presidential - candidate should! withdraw immediately. Otherwise, i he said, there would be chaos lat-; er on if anything sbouia happen t to the President and the vice ; president had to take over. Ives (R-NY) said that if Republi cans in Congress want Eisenhower to run again next year they had better give more support to his I legislative program. GEORGE MUNSON The Umixiua School picnic was held Tuesday at the school and was well attended by parents and friends. It was estimated that ab(it 180 were there. A potluck dinner was served at noon. Ella Teller was chairman. assisted by Roberta Coffey, F 1 o Rippstein, Helen Liles and Mary Winniford. Parents visited the teachers and the rooms. The day was finished with a ball game. Of especial in terest to all was the new two room addition which is now under con struction. , To Salam Mrs. C. S. Mobley of Umwiua drove to Salem Friday, where she spent the weekend with her daugh ter. Sunday she visited Silver Creek Falls. Mrs. Esther Cooper was a guest of the Rainbow Garden Club at Winston Tuesday, for their last field trip of the spring. The group went ro roro s tor dinner, return ing home in the late afternoon. Elmer Clayton of Oakland. Calif., was a dinner guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Will Lone Tuesday. He has been a teacher in the Oak land High School In California for 30 years and is retiring. He will spend several weeks in this vicin ity. He plans to camp most of his time on his ranch at Melrose. He was born at Umoqua, his folks be ing one of the first to have dona tion land claims here. Eligibility rules for the aid to dependent chil dren program have been tighten ed by the State Welfare Commis sion. A wife who refuses to sign a complaint against her husband after being deserted will not be eligible to receive grants. Another change calls for no payments until 60 days after desertion by the hus band and father. In the 60-day period, the family would be cared for by general assistance payments. Five investigators were named to work in connection with the aid to dependent children program.
