FROM NINE TO FIVE By Jo Fitehtr Sat., May 28, 1955 The Nwi-Rviaw, Reieburg, Or. 13 FUNNY BUSINESS By FRANK O'BRIEN WASHINGTON I The nation's population reached an estimated 165 million persons at 51 minutes and 51 seconds past 4 a. m. (PST) Friday. The figure was ticked off at that moment on. a "census clock," an electrical device which keeps track of the country's population growth on the basis of statistical averages. Census Bureau officials and a few other spectators were on hand in the Commerce Department lob by to watch the clock record the population milestone. Actually,' the clocl! had to have a little boost. By Us own mechanical means, the population indicator is able only to change its last six digits. Consequently, it changed from 164. 999.999, to 164.000,000. An attendant had to go up a stepladder and change the "four" to a "five" making the figure read 165,000,000. The clock is superimposed on a larse map of the United States with four lines of flashing lights. One line of lights flashes each 8 second, to denott a birth. A second line flashes each 21 sec onds, denoting a death. A third each two minutes signals the ar rival of an Immigrant and the fourth flashes each 24 minutes to mark departure of an emigrant. These, of course, are all average times. The machine adds these statis tical occurrences together and each 12 seconds flicks a new num ber up, denoting a net addition to the population of one person. The Census Bureau . keeps in close touch with the nation's vital statistics, and changes the ma chine's timing as changes occur In the rate at which births, deaths, immigrations and emigrations take place. A population of 165 million rep resents a growth of over one quarter since 1940 In the nation's population, which includes armed forces overseas. On Jan. 1, 1940, the nation's total population num bered 131.584,000. Answer to Previous Pulile I 10th U. S.
